Fuel gauge problem

Ok so when my needle hit's half tank the needle goes right down to a quarter of a tank. Anyone know what the problem might be ? I tryed searching but have not found anything.

could be a bad sender, could be a bad gauge, the fsm should detail the testing procedure

99% of the time, it's the fuel level sending unit.
