I have a 99 Infiniti QX4, and lately whenever I fill it up, the needle on the gauge only shows 7/8(in between 3/4 and full). I need to know what needs to be done to fix this problem so I can get a more accurate reading.

Probably need to replace fuel sending unit (float inside the tank). Good idea to replace fuel pump at same time to avoid repeat labor. Fuel pumps usually last around 100K miles.

I have a 1999 q45 is otherwise great shape, but the fuel gauge only reads 7/8 full with a full tank.

I notice in other post that everyone recommends waiting to replace the sending unit when the fuel pump needs replacing. Is this because there are a lot of labor hours associated with just replacing the fuel sending unit?

Is $125 the cheapest price for a sending unit?

I live in Phoenix, AZ. My Q only has 35K miles. I complete the scheduled maintenance. Is it a certainty that I will need to replace the fuel pump? If so, what is the likely mileage?

Could be a worn carbon patch on the sender. You probably won't have to replace the pump until at least 80k. The labor is virtually the same for one item or both. You can check with one of our sponsors on the part--they offer factory parts with internet pricing. Joe's in Scottsdale, 1-888-216-5328.

Parts will wear out due to age regardless of low mileage on any vehicle. Its a fact of life.
