I have a '95 nissan 240sx. The fuel gauge has the needle pointed as far down as possible even though it has gas in it. I checked the sending unit but it doesn't look like a conventional sending unit so I'm kind of confused.

Yeah that's a funny lookin sending unit huh. Anyways mine was doin the same thing. Its not as hard as you would think. If you have taken the time to take the cover off and acutally look at then you have already done the hardpart. Just remember this that when you replace the sending unit get a new gasket for the top lid.

The problem could be in the fuel level float unit or in the gauge. The float unit has 2 wires, a dark green signal wire that goes to the gauge on the dash and a black wire that goes to ground near the tank.
