I appear to have a defective fuel gauge sending unit or fuel gauge. My symptoms are at about 1/3 tank of gas, it drops below measure on the gauge(needle plummets), then it will pop back up after 10 or so min, then its fine till around an 1/8th tank and at that point it seems to not come back. This is a consistant problem, every tank of gas. It doesnt matter if I am going around a corner/hard acc/hard dec.

I am 99% sure its the sending unit but is there anything else I should do to troubleshoot before replacing that? I am not too familiar with the wiring between the sender and the gauge so I am not sure if whatever interprets the signal could be bad as well. All other gauges work 100%.

Any help/advice would be swell.

Mine gets to the E mark at like 240 miles of city driving when I still get around another 80 out of it. So ya, the S14 fuel gauge is funky.

I think the issues you are describing are quite different than the ones I am having. The problem I am having is that when it gets to 1/3 of a tank it drops below e....i dont mean a little bit like you are low on gas, I mean below like it bottoms the gauge out, like the resistance is so high or low on the signal its getting from the sender in the tank that the needle basically shuts off. The symptoms you guys are describing sound more like a measurement issue vs an electrical. I know my issue is electrical but I am not sure whether it is an issue with the needle or the sending unit. I would hope that every s14 out there doesnt have this problem. And yes, I could gauge my mileage for refills by my tripometer but I like my stuff to work at least as well as its supposed to :)

Im thinking its just the sending unit going bad but just wanted to see if anyone else has had this particular problem and fixed it.

I found what I was looking for. I guess I posted to the wrong forum :)

Here is what I found if other people are having the same problem.
