Hi, I have an 09 SL AWD got 2000km on it and I noticed that everytime I fill up at the pump to the "click", the fuel gauge shows 1 bar missing at the top (full). Besides the obvious that maybe the light burnt out, I called my local Nissan dealership and the service guy told me that they have been having problems with high sulphur content with the regular gas in BC and Alberta and recommened me to switch to using mid grade gas. Has anyone else heard this from their dealership in BC or Alberta? I also complained of the poor fuel consumption (even though with the low mileage) of 11.5L/100km mostly city and he said going to mid grade would help get better mileage. I find that hard to believe but he services Nissan's all day and I don't know squat. Is this in a TSB or something?

Hi sml,

There actually is a TSB for fuel gauge errors on '08-'09 Rogues. It's listed under Technical Service Bulletins in the Official Rogue FAQ. Look for NTB09-009 see here:

I have an 09 SL FWD and I have issues with my fuel gauge reading erratically also. From turning the car off and then on again I can gain or lose 1/4 tank of gas indicated or it'll fluctuate while I'm driving. Pretty irritating. Been like that since I picked up the car 6 weeks ago and put 7500 km on it. Fuel mileage isn't all that great either on mine. I'm all HWY driving and still am only getting 9.9L-10.5L /100 km (24-25 mpg) Thanks for Philipa for pointing out there's a TSB on this issue. I'm going to have to call my dealership and inquire about it and see if I can get the unit replaced.

My dealer told me that is only for the 2008!!!

I still have the problem and also, the accurancy of the fuel level is pretty bad...

Need to get a little discussion with my dealer when I will it the 12k km.

Here is the first bit of the TSB.

It clearly includes some of the early '09 models. So it will depend on your build date. It's not possible to determine this from the VIN. The dealer will have the tools/information necessary to determine the build date.

Quote »NTB09-009 February 5, 2009ROGUE; FUEL GAUGE DOES NOT READ FULL, OR SLOW TO RESPONDAPPLIED VEHICLES: 2008 - 2009 Rogue (S35)APPLIED DATES: Built before September 5, 2008

IF YOU CONFIRM• Fuel level gauge does not read full when tank is full.OR• Fuel level gauge is inaccurate or reads erratically.

ACTION• For 2WD models, replace the fuel sender unit only.• For AWD models, replace the fuel sender unit and sub-sender unit.[/quote]I will e-mail you the TSB so you can take it to your dealer.

Thanks. I got my 2009 in June, so hard to say. But what I'm sure, is that I have the same problem as described in the TSB.

Thanks again.

Yeah, that's the problem.

If you want to know the build date of your vehicle, look at the metal badge down on the lower driver's door sill area, then compare to the date range of affected vehicles and you'll know if you're covered under the TSB. Good luck.

Regarding your problem that Nissan TSB is the sending unit that is inside the tank. Tell then to check it and replace it and it would all be good.

Philipa, do you mind emailing me as well?

While I don't think mine shown problems like sml, I did happen to notice the fuel gauge missing 1 bar on a recent fill up... Bot mine in Late Feb 2009, so i "may" have caught the tail end of cars being affected

thanks

Good luck getting it fixed. I have been hassling with Nissan for over a year now on my 08. They have replaced everything and it still does it if I don't wait until 1/4 tank to fill it up. My Service Manager has been on Nissan, but they have just stopped returning his calls about it. I guess if you ignore the problem long enough it will go away.......

OP here: So, I took it into the dealer and they did replace the fuel level sender unit with a supposedly "newer" one that's better. I haven't had time to fill up the tank to see if it fixed my problem with the fuel gauge not reading full. With regards to using mid-grade fuel, I was told by a different tech that it may benefit fuel economy since the engine is tuned to adapt to different octane level so it defintely could make a bit of a difference performance wise if not efficiency wise. Also with higher octane gas, the reduction of sulphur content would help. Thanks for the reference to the TSB. btw, my rogue's manf date is May/June 2009.
