fuel filter

I'm replacing my fuel filter. My best guess is to remove the relay then let the car run out of the gas in the filter then pull it off? Is this right?

Take some vise grip pliers pinch off the hose just before the filter. Pull the fuel pump fuse over by the battery and start the engine. It will quit almost immediately. Pinching it off eliminates pretty much all fuel spillage, but do put a rag under that area.
