I replaced my fuel filter today and when I was draining the old filter, I noticed that the last of what was in the filter was turning the snow black. I poured out some of it into my hand and this is what it looked like: I'd say that filter change was well past due. Now that I've seen what was in the filter, I'm worried about the pump.

As well you should be!

Looks like gutter water off of an old roof!

The question is that the dirt you purchased or the insides of failing fuel hoses?

Some microscopic examination will tell you which.

I always use air to reverse blowout the crud for examination. [on mine only].

Filters are so inexpensive they should be replaced annually just in case.

You can blow out [evaporate] the gasoline and weight the dirt accumulation in grams.

What's snow?

Definitely buy a few form Joe and cahnge again in 3 to 6 months. Might want to really steam clean your fuel tank when you replace the pump.

Slowly, you will discover the deferred maintenance that caused the previous owner to sell it.

Noob question: Who's Joe?

What's snow you say? Come on up to the Canadian Prairies and you'll find out. You can also learn what REAL cold is too.

As far as deferred maintenance by the PO goes, the stack of dealer receipts that came with the car tell me that it's been farily well maintained. There are, of course, a few things that need some catching up on, but nothing critical.
