i have had horrible gas issues with my car around 300 miles to a tank mostly freeway driving. i have tried all types of solutions, tune-up, different grade gas, new spark plugs, new air filter, pretty much everything but a new fuel filter. now i have read that these cars dont need to have the fuel filter replaced, my friend who is a mechanic said i should look in to replacing it, does anyone think this will help. just to note i have 245/35/19 tires on 3 piece lexani rims that are kinda heavy but i have been told this shouldnt make that much of a difference and my alignment is off a little bit but nothing major. (they cant align my car some issssue with the control arm, i need a new one)

There are several things you can do to pull some extra gas mileage out of your car. 1st, check/replace your air filter - if there's enough crap built up in it, it could drasticaly drop your mpg. 2nd, oil/filter change if you haven't done one recently. Thirdly, although slightly more expensive than your average fuel fill up, run a full tank of premium unleaded through the car. This should help free up any built up grime/crud in the engine and gas lines. I have no opinion of the gas additives that are supposed to clean your injectors, but trying one of those with a fill up couldn't hurt.

As with the fuel filter, I was told by Autozone that they don't carry our specific fuel filters because when replaced, you'll need a new fuel pump, too. Complete BS. Im not sure where to get a filter from, but replacing it couldn't hurt.

Basics:

1- Air Filter2- Oil Change3- Premium Unleaded (+/- injector cleaner; your choice)4- Fuel Filter5- Plugs/wires (Although usually done on cars with higher mileage - 80k+, new plugs/wires can't hurt anything - just make sure the plugs you put in are comparable or better than what the car already has.)

300 is about all I got on my last tank of gas (letting the car warm up and putzing around town). My understanding is the filter is integrated into the tank unit. If you get your replaced, let me know the details.... Had you been getting better mileage previously?--Mike

i use to get almost 400 to a tank and it has slowly decreased over time. i treat my car like a baby, all major service and maintanence gets done regularly. i have driven 90 miles on this tank and i have almost wasted half a tank. i will be taking it to the dealer to have them run diagnostics on it. i know it is a rip off going there but i have no other options left.

I'd start by switching back to the factory wheels. Heavy large wheels can reduce fuel economy by a fair amount. Also if you're running anything less than 91 octane fuel you may experience mileage issues.

If you are badly out of alignment then it will definitely affect gas mileage.Dirty Mass airflow sensor will affect mileage. They have a special spray cleaner specially for that at napa auto parts for about 5-6 bucks.I cleaned mine just for the H*LL of it.02 sensors could be getting old.go to http://www.infinitipartsusa.com or call. The fuel filter is about $10-$13 bucks plus make sure the seal comes with it.http://www.innerbean.com/housecor/fuel_filter.html.This site is for the 5th gen maxima which is the same for our cars generally and will tell you step by step how to change this. Its real simple.Even though the fuel filter is deemed an "unserviceable item",Even maxima enthusiasts recommend a 50-60K change.

Note:Enjoy your $6K wheels.I run 245/35/20 on my '00 I-30 and I love them and dont give a rats A** what my mileage is because I just like that "Bling Factor" but then again I do get 375 miles hwy on a tank

Also you are supposed to only be using the highest grade of gas possible due to the compression ratio of our vehicles. You are hurting your engine using anything less.Your owners manual recommends this and it also says this inside the gas tank door.Make sure you put the stock NGK platinum plugs back in your car.You dont have to get the $11-$13 plug. The $3 NGK platinums work well too.
