Hi, I'm new here! Our family just bought our NIssan Versa, and it came in today, and since im a new driver I have a number of questions.

The first one is regarding the fuel door release. We drove it home today, only to realize that we couldnt get it open. A small problem, but one that definitely needs to get fixed...so has anyone else had this problem? I think we're just going to bring it back to the dealer tomorrow, but it is a bit of a hassle.

Secondly, I found on the internet a study saying that the versa is one of the worst cars for interior toxins. Here is the link...http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/20/your ... or-toxins/. I have no idea how reliable the source it, but after reading it im a little worried. Any opinions??

Third, this is our first new car in about ten years. I know the Versa has become a fairly popular car here in Ontario recently, but in terms of dealership service we were definitely not very satisfied. I understand that it takes a while to locate the car, but we had to constantly call our salesman for updates on when our car would come in. It ended up taking just under two weeks- is that normal and our expectations were too high?

Thanks!

For you third question, I strongly believe it's fairly commun. Other people had problems getting their Versas. I, personnally, also had to wait two weeks. It looks like if the car is not on the lot, the dealer has to order it from somewhere else. In example: I bought my car in a dealership in Trois-Rivières, but they had to get the car directly from a Montréal train station's (where all the Versas are shipped in Québec)... with all the administrative .

Now that you have it, enjoy your car !

#1 there is a release to the lower left of the stearing wheel. If it still doesn't open, take it to the dealer, or have it towed if you run out of gas.

#2 scare tactics from a greenie. This has been discussed & discounted. Similar to throwing a grain of salt into the ocean.

Can't answer your fuel door question, since my Versa has yet to come in (it's supposed to arrive on the 8th).

As far as the plasticizers concern, I think it's a bunch of hooey. The same type of plastics have been used in millions of consumer products for almost 90 years with no documented evidence of ill effects. Besides, most of the emissions from a car's interior are within a few weeks. If you're concerned about it, just wipe off the surfaces, keep your windows clean, and crack the windows when the car sits in the hot sun.

As far as it taking so long for them to find a car, well that depends on your local situation. The dealer may have had to get a car from a distant location if none of the local dealers had any cars to sell, or didn't want to sell the ones they had to another dealer. They're not obligated to trade cars. Did you specify the car you wanted with a specific options package or color? I am having to wait 2 weeks for my Versa, but that is on an 08 that the dealer was getting in anyway. However, they should have kept you updated on the situation every few days or so.

1. I haven't had a problem with my fuel door (only filled it up twice so far) but anectdotally I've heard of a few fuel door problems. All immediately fixed by Nissan. If it's not working, just about every dealer except one we've heard about in Florida will be happy to take care of it for you.

2. Did you read the replies under that article you linked to? Did you follow the link they provided in their own article, "others are more skeptical"? If you read those you probably wouldn't be questioning the toxins.

The Ecology Center they cite is a fairly radical environmental group out of one of the most liberal ecology centers in the U.S., Berkeley, CA. They have done a lot of good for the environment with regards to recycling and such, but they need to get their own house in order before they start getting out of their area of expertise, recycling, and going after the toxins in car interiors. Just last week (July 17), their farmers' market featured and advertised BBQ'd meats and vegetables. By their own standards the BBQ is about the most toxic thing you can do, puts all kinds of carcinogens in the food, and pollutes the atmosphere. I know from logic classes over the years that this is "poisoning the well", but my warning is to take everything from that group with a huge grain of salt.

3. We were fortunate because when we walked onto the dealer's lot they had almost everything we wanted in a car that was on the lot already. We test drove the car, bought it and drove away.

1. There's a small metal cable that connects to the back of the fuel release switch, it probably came unhooked somehow. You can grab the cable with your fingers and pull on it to open the fuel door if you need immediate access, and if your fingers are skinny enough you can reach behind and reconnect it. If not, take it to the dealer and they'll do it.

I can attest to a Fuel Door Release Issue. My cable snapped off from the release switch inside the car about a month after I bought it (approx. 4,000 miles). Luckily, I was able to find the cable and manually pull it to open the fuel door and fill up. It's also covered under warranty and my Nissan dealer fixed it no problem during a routine maintainence visit.

As far as the car toxins issue - I LOVE new car smell so I could care less about some radical environmental extremist web site. Like a few people said earlier....Open the windows!

I too was one of the lucky ones in which my dealer had the exact car I wanted. I can say that I waited about a month for a bumper though so I can only assume a whole car would take about a year...

If a car is not available locally, 2 weeks is not an unusual amount of time to wait. If you had ordered a Versa this time last year, you would have been waiting 2-3 MONTHS because of how many were on order vs. how few had been produced.

MAN I tell you what, The same thing happened to me. The freakin' cable snapped off the very first time I tried to fill up for gas. I went and had it repaired by the dealership at no cost, BUT when I went to go fill it up again, SAME damn problem. Its such a pain to go and get this fixed everytime....i wonder if this falls under the lemon law, maybe i'll get a new car lol

The cable for my fuel door release came undone. I just pull the cable now since it's kinda hard for me to fit where I need to reattach it. Scared the crap out of me at first.

I waited like four months for my car. Dealership experience was less than thrilling. I had my car serviced at another dealership 'cause the sales dealership was too busy to book my car. I felt like I was punished 'cause I bought the bottom end car.

My fuel door cable came detached too about 3 months or so after I got her. The dealership fixed it, but they ended up having to order a new part because they couldn't get the old one to stay attached to the release switch. Took a couple weeks for it to come in, but I haven't had a problem with it since.

I've fuel door issues twice. Both times it was below28 degrees farenheit. I had to pull the latch again and make sure it was pulled all the way. That opened the door both times.

Is this a NIssan thing? A coworker has an ALtima and I have to drag the pliers out about once a month and "rescue" her. A Dr I work for has aG35 and he had fuel door issues, too. My Versa has only needed to be fueled up once so far, so I got my fingers crossed.
