90- S13 (original owner)I can be in neutral or any gear at any speed and my fuel will cut out when I hit 5000 RPM's. I had a new trans installed & I think the 5th gear sensor could be the problem, if the car thinks it is in 5th gear then the fuel would be cut all the time at 5K. The fuel will cut off if I lightly accelerate or at WOT. Then once the RPM's get to 4500 it will get fuel for a second then once it hits 5K it cuts on and off until I let off the gas or shift into a higher gear. I know where the neutral sensor is and also the OD (5th gear) sensors are located in the transmission but I do not know how to test them or what I can do to solve the problem. I have a Chipped ECU I installed in 93 & it does not have any lights to check. This just started after the trans was out so I am sure it is one of the sensors. Should I just short out the 5th gear sensor to test it? I know I could try different things but with my bad luck I am sure I will mess up something.Any Advise?T H A N K S

You are on the right track with the 5th gear sensor.

It basicly is just a switch. To test just unplug it and see it your problem goes away. If not check for pinched wires etc.

To test the sensor just check for continuity accross the 2 wires going to the sensor. it shoud show an "open" or no continuity when NOT in 5th gear and be "closed" or show continuity when in 5th gear.

If you paid a shop for the trans work including instal then have them fix ther screw up.

Yeah, check that 5th gear position sensor. Check the neutral one also. Do they have the same plugs? They were probably switched accidentally...

I disconnected both sensors & it solved the problem

I plugged in the neutral and it was fine, but when I connected the 5th gear sensor the problem started again. So I just disconnected the 5th gear and everything is fine.

The spedo works fine, is it OK to run without it connected?

Maybe I will switch the 2 connectors and see if that fixes the problem, but if not is it OK to run with the 5th gear unplugged?

You are not going to hurt anything if you disconnect the 5th gear sensor. You just remove one of the many limits that Nissan puts on the engines/cars. Just be sure to stay safe and carfull on the road.

FYI we run our Dirt Track car with no wiring at all to the trans and it runs fine (now after chasing 3 bad ecus and other problems for over a year and a half )

Awesome. My car just randomly started cutting at 5th and I remembered this thread. I'll unplug the sensor tomorrow and hopefully my problems will be gone!

What does the neutral sensor do? Does it work with the clutch switch so that the car will not start unless the clutch is depressed. Well if was in a gear and started that should not matter. I just wanted to jack my own thread but curious on the neutral sensor.
