Fuel Controller bypass?

I'm putting the VG into a sandrail and am running a non-socketed ECU. Can anyone school me on the logic between the ECU and fuel controller for controlling the pump? I would like to hook up the fuel pump to the ECU so it does the standard 3 second prime with the key on, the shuts off until it detects RPM, but I don't really want to run a 2nd computer just to do that. Can I get away with just putting the fuel pump on a switch or is there a certain feed back the ECU is looking for from the pump controller so it doesn't throw a code? Thanks.
