Those low priced inline pumps aren't know for their long lifes.
I've mounted my pump inside the tank 2 ways. I took the ring that the pump mounts to on the stock tank, cut it off the tank, cut a hole in the top of the fuel cell just large enough for the pump to go thru, put the mounting ring inside the cell, used the stock big o-ring to seal it and mounted the pump on the fuel cell, since I race this car circle track, I placed the pump in the right rear corner of the tank. Since my fuel cell wasn't as deep as the stock tank, I shortened the assembly that holds the pump inside the tank. I hooked the stock output and return line to the fuel pump using short lenghts of fuel injection rated hoses. I hooked the stock fuel vapor recirculation hose to the vent hose on the tank.
On another car I attached the fuel pump to the inside of the filler ring by making a bracket, then I drilled 2 holes in the top of the tank for the supply and return line, used fuel tank bulkhead fittings to get the fuel thru those two holes, and again used the vent hose for the vapor recirculation system.
