I recently purchased a used, 2004 FX35. The owner's manual shows that the fuel capacity is 90L/23 gallons but the maximum that I have been able to add is only 67L/18 gallons. This week, I drive 20km after the fuel light came on and was only able to add 62L/16 gallons. Every time, I let it fully settle and slowly top it up to the max.

The dealership just told me that they're not sure why it's happing. Has anyone heard of this?

thanks

welcome to NICO.

It is possible the fuel is coming up much quicker on the fill side of the saddle tank and hitting the cut off faster then the fuel can transfer to the other side of the saddle. That would be my guess. Question, does the fuel gauge read full when your done filling?

Thanks for the information NISTECH. Yes, each time I have filled up, the gauge did display Full. I'm just wondering if the gauge is off since the most fuel I've been able to add was a time when it showed a little above Empty (able to add 67L) vs. the time that I let the light come on (only able to add 62L). Both times, I was consistent in the amount I kept nudging in after the auto shutoff and they both showed that the tank was right at Full. Incidentally, I do find that the tank / gauge works like a reverse funnel since I get a lot more mileage out of the bottom half than the top (new to me on a car) but I doubt that has any relation.

If your tank is set up like the murano, which I am pretty sure it is, It has what they call a saddle tank. in the middle of the vehicle it loops over the drive shaft. Because of this your vehicle has 2 sending units instead of one. It take s the 2 readings and comes up with an equasion[sp?] to determine how much fuel you have left. You only have one fuel pump though, It uses a venturi to draw fuel from the opposing side of the tank. If there is a difference between the levelt he 2 sensors are reading it my be judging on the side of saftey[to keep you from running completely out of fuel] and saying there is actually less in the tank then there really is.

A suggestion here if you really want to see if every thing is ok. Get your self a one gallon gas can fill it up and keep it handy. run your vehicle completely out of fuel till it dies. Add the gallon of gas and get immediatly to a station and fill it. You can pretty much judge about how much of the gallon you used getting to the station if you know how much you get to the gallon. Then you can figure EXACTLY how much fuel your tank will accept on a fill up. I dont know if canada uses the CEL or not. But when you get gas dont continue filling when the pump stops as you could set a code and trigger your CEL.

The most I've ever put in at one time is just over 22.5 gallons. My light usually turns on with about 40 miles to go (on the computer) - I can usual go at least that much before I get too scared. Ha Ha.

Also the reserve is huge as the gauges are real conservative.

In my Nissans, after I buy them just one time; I usually drive until it says E and then drive it some more and then some more yet.

Usually dont run out of gas.and then fill a tank tahts <much> emptier than I would fill in real world and get close to the listed capacity.

I do this only one time cuz its not good to run your tank real low habitually even tho , for this rare purpose its ok. IMO

Fred..
