Most of you know whats going on with my car right now and why my KA is dead, if you missed it heres a link... zerothread?id=247190

Well I got started on pulling the motor today... The FIRST two things I did where release fuel pressure and disconnect the battery.

I then started by removing both radiator hoses and radiator fan shrouds, charge pipe, Z32 MAF, and disconected the turbo oil lines

Then I took off the front bumper so I could gain access to the couplers holding the ic pipes to the intercooler and the intercooler pipes...

I got the downpipe unbolted, exhaust manifold unbolted, oil lines removed, ps res unbolted, unhooked fuel lines, unhooked sensors and wiring . Other than that I didnt get to much done today. Taking the front bumper off took a little longer than expected and I had one or two errands I had to do. Hopefully by the end of 2moro il be in here with some pics of a motorless engine bay

Im having a great time even though things are moving a little slower than expected, I kinda wanted the engine out today. I wasnt able to use any air tools today though, im getting some 2moro. Im waking up at 10am tomorrow to get an early start. The plan is to unbolt the transmission, get the loose stuff out, and get off any misc vaccum hoses and what not, and get that motor outa there!

Here are some pics of KA#2 (with a TRG powdercoated valve cover )

looks fire red but its more of a candy red

Let me know what you guys think, and anyone know what I should clean the block with?

I was going to unbolt the trannny and leave it in, do you think its easier to just pull the transmission with the motor?

IMO it's easier and allows for an easier clutch swap too.

Yea I agree pull both out at the same time. I have done it 3 times that way. The last time I only had to have help moving the engine lift with the engine and transmission.

mid day update.... everything is disconected and the engine is ready to come out. I decided to unbolt the transmission, you guys might be right but I think in my situation this will be easier to just pull the engine. Im borrowing an engine hoist in about 45 minutes and that KA is coming out! Here are some pics, I got the intercooler & pipes removed, ac pump, ps pump disconnected, all vaccum lines.

pics taken with my laptops built int camera

And I took the hood off right after these pics, would have taken it off earlier but its freakin hot out and the hood provides good shade

I recently pulled my KA due to a previously botched timing guide replacement (cover was leaking BAD) Took it down to a short block, full gasket and seal set, YET ANOTHER timing set, (and JY timing cover... this guy was an idiot) Anyway, my engine was is BAD BAD shape for being cleaned. I used tie-downs 9 ways to Sunday on the tailgate of my uncle's truck, and took it to the local carwash. Their engine degreaser works fairly well. But the best stuff in the world is Brake Cleaner from your local AP store. Only problem is it's kinda expensive cuz those high pressure cans empty QUICK!

2 things to keep in mind.....

1. The selector knob says Engine Degreaser! So tell that attendant that keeps telling you that you can't clean your engine there to go screw himself. It's no different on the tailgate of one truck than it was in the engine compartment of the one you pulled it from.

2. Keep in mind that one drop of water in a bad place, (ie. in a rod or main bearing) will absolutely RUIN YOUR DAY! Remember these are HIGHLY machined surfaces that will rust INSTANTLY. In the few days to a few weeks your engine may not run, water you can't even see can scrap your cams or crank. I washed mine before disassembly, and packed blue paper towels into the exhaust, intake, and distributer holes, and then tried not to directly spray those areas. It seemed to work okay, the surface got wet, but as I pulled the towels, the inner part was still dry, so it seems to have worked as planned. Good Luck!!

Hey man, I noticed you are in Jersey. Do you think you could possibly help me with my KA build?
