I have a 2004 Frontier and I'm currently out of town visiting a relative. I went to open my tailgate and one side of the handle broke. Now I can't open the tailgate, and I have a shell on the truck, so I get get my large items out. I have the service manual but it's 350 miles away.

So, can anyone tell me how to open this? I also have the factory bed liner on the inside of the tailgate. Thanks.

I assume the shells door is still in working order? There should be an access panel on the inside of the tailgate which will gain you access to the guts of the tailgate.

Here's the complete service manual for 2004 in pdf format for you.

Thanks for the link. I have all of that at home, but I'm just traveling with an iPad.

Now that I've looked at it in the light, it looks like I might be able to open it with a pair of needle nose pliers.

What else would the tailgate be called? I've looked in the IDX (index) PDF, but no tailgate.

Edit, it's the body rear end and opener.
