Sounds like you may have a coolant leak.
Frontiers, Xterras, and older Pathfinders have a very common problem in which the intake manifold gaskets will leak coolant. The leak will either pour out onto the manifolds, or pour into the cylinder(s), or both. With coolant entering the combustion chamber, especially in good amounts, it will definitely cause a misfire, and if the leak is bad enough, hydro-lock the engine.
Take a flashlight and look down into the crevices below the distributor and intake manifold. If you see any green/whitish sluggy build-up anywhere down there, especially where the intake manifolds meet the head, then you have a coolant leak.
To replace the intake manifold gaskets for a usual DIYer is quite a task. It involves taking off the intake manifold (fun), fuel injectors with the rail, lower intake plenum, L-bend radiator hose, and usually the coolant pipe the runs the length of the block. All of these parts are prone to leakage over time on the VG33DE engine and should all be resealed and/or re-gasketed when dismantling the top end for a coolant leak. And it is especially important to thoroughly clean all the gasket mating surfaces of any old gasket material and sluggy build-up to ensure proper sealing of the new seals.
If you plan on doing it yourself, go to the Nissan parts department. Give them your year and such. Ask for the Upper intake plenum gasket, both lower intake manifold gaskets, that large diameter "L" shaped radiator hose, and the knock sensor. Go to Autozone or such for a tube of Permatex Ultra-Grey Gasket maker. Reason behind the the knock sensor is that it is RIGHT there when you remove all of the manifolds and lower coolant pipe. And even after 60k miles, a knock sensor can go bad and cause a loss in power, gas economy, etc. and not even cause a Check Engine Light to illuminate. And since you are there, you might as well change it as well.
Good luck with it........
