I sell cars at a Nissan store and we have a customer that just bought a new 2016 Frontier SV and it does not have an illuminated ignition ring like the Pro-4X and the SL trim levels do. He's a bit anal and now after he's already purchased the truck he's realized that the ignition ring is not illuminated and is really upset. Of course Nissan tech has nothing to say except it's not available in the SV trim level blah blah blah, so I came to the forums as in my experience getting answers to questions and how-to's happens pretty quickly and accurately from the forums (I'm an Evo X owner with $20,000 worth of performance and stereo upgrades, this is my second Evo). I hope you guys can help as this guy is driving his salesperson crazy.

I jumped onto a Nissan OEM parts sight and located the illuminated ignition ring in both the Pro-4x and the SL trim levels. It's the same part number for both of those trim levels, looks the same as the SV minus the illuminated ring and the wiring harness on the back of it. My question is whether or not the truck is pre-wired for the harness, i.e. is the harness in the steering column present to just plug and play one from a Pro4X or an SL, or would we have to tap the harness (which I don't think is going to happen, remember we're dealing with an angry customer and a brand new truck at a dealership, plug and play is doable but modding the truck is not unless he wants to have someone else do it). After looking at a Pro4X that has the illuminated ignition ring it looks to me like it comes on as soon as you open the door, then stays on in accessory and the on position and does not go out until the engine is started. Then after the engine is shut off it comes back on until you lock the door again. Also, any idea if they are the same size ring? Obviously they need to be the same size to fit in the steering column. The Pro4X and the SL are the same part number, so I'm assuming it's just a standard size ring.

Sorry for the long post but want to make sure I get all the details in as it's a new warrantied truck and this guy is going crazy over this stupid little detail that he never asked about anyway. Any help is appreciated. Also, this is a 2016, which is basically a 2015, I'm using 2015 part numbers and diagrams as even Nissan has no 2016 in the system yet. I'm sure they are the same.

Awesome question!

Unfortunately, I have no idea. You'd think things like that would be pre-wired to avoid having so many variations for wiring harnesses, but I couldn't say for sure. Can you tell if the subharness that it plugs into is the same part number on both trim levels?
