My son's 2014 Frontier, 5 speed, 4 cylinder 2.5 liter has a strange problem with the cruise control that we did not notice when we test drove it before buying it at a small used car lot.

The cc works fine in 4th gear and can be set to just about any speed within reason. But when the truck is in 5th gear the maximum speed that can be set is 58 mph. If you try to set it above that speed, 60 or 70, it will not accept it even though the dash light shows that the cruise control is turned on. We have gone over the vehicle looking under the dash and around the transmission and around the engine for aftermarket electronics and wiring and have found none.

Today, we took it to the Nissan dealer for the air bag recall and we asked that they review the ECU for speed limiter settings. They said they would, since the truck has to have the rollover sensor calibrated when the air bag is replaced. They reported that they did not find a speed setting input for limiting the cruise control speed and did not find any DTC's. But they said that their dealership diagnostic equipment cannot do a deep dive into the software settings because the factory keeps them out of that type of access. They said that only the factory service reps have the special equipment to get deep into the software.

I called a different Nissan dealer, one is much larger and that sells and services commercial trucks, and their techs said they never heard of a problem like this.

I am thinking that this truck was originally an escort vehicle and that's why it functions this way.

I found some info in the owner's manual that said the maximum speed setting is 87 mph, so something is not right.

Any suggestions?

I had a number of problems with my 05' XTerra Cruise control, 3 repairs that I had to do to keep it engaged. There are several different variables that keep it engaged, with my 6 speed MT there were issues like this an unfortunately they were not ECU programming.
