2003 Qx4 with 132k. The dealer says my right front wheel bearing is loose. They want $ 272 to remove wheel hub, repack wheel bearing with grease and set wheel bearing preload. That is per side so $ 544 to do both sides. Does anyone have an opinion on if this is worthwhile maintenance, or what further damage might be done if I delay it?

question is how loose...
If safety inspection requires this or even checks they can only allow minimal play...has to be less than half an inch IIRC....

QUESTION also - what kind of service are they offering? are they replacing BOTH cup and cone? Inner and OUTER? (it would be best to replace the cup/race inner and outer since play has already been confirmed-----its like tbelt service...your already in so better to replace it now and no need to revisit same problem coz a repack wasnt good enough)

Thanks for your feedback, I jacked up both sides last night and there was a very small wobble (about 1/16 or 1/8" play) in the right front wheel, the left side was tight). I took it in this morning and asked if they were replacing cup/cone? They said there were no parts to replace except a $17 seal kit which was included in the price. So I told them to do the right side only. Will keep my eye on the left side and if it gets loose will fix it later. The $ 272 was basically for 2.3 hours labor to do the bearing repack.

I also had asked them to check the rear suspension parts for wear. They said the rear sway bar bushings are starting to crack a little but are not loose, they have a small amount of play, but did not recommend replacement at this time. I still have the original shocks at 132k. The vehicle still handles ok, no rust anywhere, so I will just keep driving it.

$17 is too high for a seal.
Those cost less than $2
Hope it works out
