My son's 1997 Infiniti QX4 had a wabbling felling while driving mostly above 55 mph. I took it to a mechanic shop for an alignment and they told me that the "Front Wheel Bearings" on both sides had to be replaced. They gave me an estimated price of $475 to replace the bearings on both sides. Later in the day they contacted me and said that the "Front Wheel Hub/Bearing Assy" had to be replaced on both sides and the cost would be $1,093. First I was told that they could no longer purchase the individual parts to replace the bearings and then I told them to cancel the order; I was placed on hold and the shop manager came to the phone and explained that the bearing's seat was worn out and that was the reason for replacing the Hub Assy. I reluctantly agreed to complete the work and now I can't help feeling that I was taking to the cleaners. Is the replacement of the Hub Assy something common or did they took the easy way to fix the vehicle at a higher cost to me? This was my first time taking a vehicle to this shop and before I give them a review in the Yelp application, I would like to know from some of you experts out there what your thoughts are on this Issue.
Thank you in advance.

mac, QX4 people will come out of the woodwork to help you with "experience on theirs" , but more & more these days you gotta go to at least a couple of places -maybe even three or more ,time permitting, for assessments/estimate . Get that"demonstration drive" with ALL of them. This when vehicle has issues where your still driveable , not killing the car every mile etc. Of course we're all very "stuck" when say water pump/radiator blows , transmission w/no drive -your at the mercy. They did what they did , being history it WILL be only speculation even what other QX4's have to say , and so one more tip is the "Getting my old part in a box" is best for a thorogh "post-mortem" is what your looking for here.Especially keeping likeTiming componants(belt/chain/pulley) is solid selling point in convincing the new buyer you REALLY did that maint milestone!

HOLD EVERYTHING..........

Look at the upper half of that parts list for a '97 QX4..................the front seems to show CONVENTIONAL inner and outer tapered roller wheel bearing pairs like on all '60s car, meaning NO WAY should the job be nearly that expensive. OP positively needs to check on that!!!

'I was told that they could no longer purchase the individual parts to replace the bearings...'

I saw no date to establish timely relevance there.
