hey guys, I'm about to put the timing cover back on my ka24e and I was wondering, instead of me taking off the oil pan, can I loosin the head and kinda get it on that way? I don't mean taking the head off. I just mean loosening the bolts so I can kinda push up on it to slide it on? thanks guys

didnt you have the head off in the first place? you shouldve put the timing cover back on before you put the head on.

the 24E? You don't need to drop the oil pan or pull the head. If you've pulled the bolts off the front cover, pulled the pulley on the left side of the motor, crank pulley, oil pump, distributor, and water pump, and got the bolts off, with a pry bar you can pop the front cover off. The points where I used for leverage was at the upper right hand corner to get the initial split in the block and front cover. From there it's pretty easy to pull it off but no you don't need to get all that out of the way. If you pull the radiator shroud it'll make for alot more clearance when you're doing this job. Also JNM240 is right about the cover going on before the head, if you've pulled both off, the cover should have gone on first then the head.

Well you can get a bit of an angle in on the headgasket with the front cover. If you put the top of the cover on just slightly to hold up the head gasket while you angle in the rest of the front cover to clear the crank, you can slide it in that way. It'll be helpful to have a rubber mallet around at this point too. When you've got the corners of the cover basically cleared of the head or oil pan and got the crank part lined up ok, you can mallet in the cover, the amount of space you have between your radiator and your cover will limit the amount of force you can put on it, so it'll keep you from bashing it too bad. Lemmie know how it goes.
