I am probably answering my own question. I have a 1996 nissan Maxima I use as a gas saver. Every time I hit a bump or a small pot hole the front passenger side wheel makes a knocking sound, like something is loose. I used Auotzone website to help trouble shoot. I think it is the struts them selves but Autozone says it might be the strut mounts. The boot covers are ripped and tore up as well. Can anyone give me some insight?

might be a blown shock or just a strut bearing. press down on the fender a few times and see it bounce back - that shoud give you an indication if it's blown.
