The L pans and KA pans are completely different. The L series is a "Deep Skirt" design. It has bearing caps and bolts that go a loooong way into the block. the oil pan on a L/Z series motor is flat pan all the way around, until you get to the actual sump part. where as the KA pan is more of a pan design that stick down rougly 2 inches to clear the girdle all the way around then drops down even more where the sump is. DOes that kind of make sense?? I could draw a picture in photo shop if that would help. But, you should have no problem finding a front sump L/Z series oil pan. I'll check out the U pull It yards today and see what there is to offer.

well, got back from the J/Y and it looks like pretty much all LZ engines came with front sump. I saw a 1977 200sx L20B, front sump, 1982 200sx Z20 or 22E, front sump and a 1978 datsun pickup, L20B front sump. lemme know if you want any of these, I could probably score them for about $25 to $30 + shipping. could probably get an L20B crank for another $60 or so, + shipping. leme know.

yeah, i think they really did go overboard on the bolts holding the L series pans on, lol! theres a few too many of them, makes for a pain in the *** getting the buggers off. I would just stick with the Z20E pan tho, then if you needed custom mounts, you could mount that sucker as low as possible. it could get about 2 in lower than a KA.

one thing I noticed while swapping a 240sx KA24E into a 1992 4WD truck body (something I will never do again) was that the truck mounts allowed the truck motor to sit about 1.5in lower than the 240sx motor. this is due ot the fact that the KA24E in the truck has no lower end girdle. something to look into if your looking to get it lower.
