I have a '99 I30 and my mechanic just informed me that I should replace the rotors when I do the front brakes and I was wondering if this was standard procedure for Infinitis. Is this standard practice or is he just trying to get me to spend more then I have to? Please advise.

1. are you the original owner of the vehicle?2. how many miles since the last brake job?3. did he measure the thickness of the rotor, and compare it to the Nissan Speculations for minimum thickness? this is very important b/c he can't really just throw out that you need new rotors without properly measuring them or taking note of the 'notch' in the rotor that is engraved on the edge of the rotor for a quicker decision.

-he may be trying to save your life, or he may be trying to get some extra cash. #3 is very important to the validity of his recommendation.

you really should have either him, or someone else measure the thickness of the rotors. I also have a '99 I30, and to my knowledge, the rotors havnt been replaced either at all, or in a very long time. But if you do need new rotors, dont get infiniti OEM replacements, get something like Powerslot rotors. They are cheap, and i am thinking of buying some myself.

You could get a micrometer and check them yourself fairly easily.Thickness is important but you also want to be sure they arelevel and round (ie not warped). Sometimes if they are warpedyou can tell by vibration when you hit the brakes at highways speeds. The pads might have wearing problems too.
