Hello, I'm brand new to the forums and am in the process of buying a '95 240SX coupe 5 speed with 159k. The car runs well, but needs new crank seals, valve cover and oil pan gaskets. It sounds as if it more of a chore to do these than on my GTI (i.e. lifting the motor etc..), and I am looking for some advice as to whether this will be more of a pain-in-the #$%, or I should just pay up and have it done by someone else. BTW, I am pretty good with the VW's (replaced transmissions, clutches, suspensions, etc.), but have never owned a Nissan. Thanks again,Bill:beer

Welcome to nico .

you will need to pull the trans to replace the rear crank seal. Try doing just the front seal and the pan reseal first. The rear main may not even be leaking. Yes you need to lift the engine to do the pan. But if you worked on VW this should be a breeze seen how I wouldnt touch a VW with a 10 ft. sleadge hammer...lol

Owened one at one time. that was all It took for me to say not for me man. I also owned a pinto at one time... I would of taken that over the VW any day as far as repairs go. Nissans are alot easier to work on then VW in my opinion .

Nistech, Thanks for the words of encouragement. How is the specialty tool situation with these cars. I ask, because I have "I don't know how many" task-specific tools (both bought and made)for my VW's that you just can't do the job without. Also, what is the option for factory manuals other than the Chiltons? Thanks again for the help

I dont recommend chiltons myself since they seem so vague. FSM is the most comprehensive manual. It has very detailed info on torque specs and such as well as cicuit diagrams which most other manuals dont have. The 240 both S13 and S14 have several online sources available I just dont know where to find them yet ,since I have access to all of them at work I never really looked for them online. But they are available online in PDF format. Ask around in the 240 forums. One of those guys will definitly have a lead on where to get one. There are some nissan special tools but for what your planning on doing there are none needed. Just basic hand tools. you made need a standard pulley remover to extract the crank pulley. Most of the time though once you remove the crank pulley bolt, you can walk it off with a pair of pry bars or long screw drivers. you gentely pry outward from behind the pulley on either side with a walking motion of the pry bars. It will usually just slide right off using this method.
