Alright, I'm doing the timing chain/tensioner/guides thing and am ready to put it all back together. I thought I might as well replace the front oil seal while I'm at it, just to be safe.

Question: Which way does the oil seal face? The old seal is mangled and you can't tell which way it was in there.

Does it go with the spring side in or spring side out?

pretty dumb question, but am asking because I would not want an oil leak disappointment after I've put it all together.

Normally seals go spring side in. The design of the seal lip turns away fluids that come up against it. Is there a second lip on the outside or othe side of the seal, and without the spring? This would be a dust lip. Tip: If there is a dust lip, put a light ring of grease between the two. It will help keep out dirt, and will also lube the sealing edge of the seal. Either way, be sure to lube the seal to protect it from wear until engine oil gets up to that part of the crank.
