Is a front mount intercooler the best in all conditions?

Im thinking that a front mount would get in front of the radiator and cause cooling problems in hot weather and sever conditions.

Get a Koyo radiator and a couple of 14" high CFM fans.... problem solved :)

But honestly, you could always get an air-water intercooler.

Nils showing me up. I bet that'll happen a lot, LOL :)

j/k Nils. I'm probably going to be rolling out to Vegas for Test & Tune pretty soon here. You know I'm going to want to see that car while I'm there.

Yeah I have a feeling that Nils car will show up a lot of 240's. I have 1 14 inch electric fan on the stock radiator. I can't match a Koyo with 2 14 inch fans. Oh well I just can't wait until my car is running.:D

J-Spec Tuner - I paid full retail for that set-up from Heavy Throttle, Jeff has been very helpful over the phone... yeah it was about $600...

BuudWeizErr - Make sure to email me before you come out... it will probably be another 2 weeks untill the car runs... but it would be fun to hook up.

Ace - all I am really doing to the car is cooling and maintenance mods... my car wont really be super powerful, just getting all the safety stuff so the car will last at the track, but it sure is coming along nicely =)

Oh come on Nils I know you are hiding a T51R. Don't BS me. But I am doing the exact same swap as you. 1 question whos doing your wiring? I am having Yuri do it at HT. He said it may be finished by the middle of this week. Then I plan on having it overnight delivered so its here by Friday. Then set fire to the beast.;)

To answer the original question, no a FMIC is not best in all[/all] conditions.

For drag racing, a water to air is the best. They can have over 100% efficiency when the reservoir is filled with ice (or dry ice) and water...no air to air can touch that. But for extended driving conditions (like road racing and rally), it's just added weight b/c eventually that ice will melt, the water will get warm, and the efficiency will drop significantly.

For air to air intercoolers to work their best, they need lots of cool air (duh). The easiest way to do that is to mount it on the front of the car. That eliminates the stresses of creating ducting...but proper, well though out ducting can work wonders in the means of cooling. I'm not going to go into details, but, in some instances i/c's are mounted in odd locations (under the hood of the car, flush with the floor), and of course midship and rear engined cars have them in the back as a TMIC or a ducted i/c. I reccomend reading maximum boost for a thorough explaination on intercooling.

Additionally, from a moderate amount of boost standpoint the side mount intercooler is the most efficient so long as it is properly aligned. Efficiency does not mean that it has the best cooling power though as it depends on your applications, it's pretty easy to overwhelm a side mount intercooler versus a front mount intercooler because of the reduced surface area, additionally if you need to move high volumes of air that low amount of pressure drop does nothing for you as the intercooler loses it's ability to cool that volume of air. Woohoo!

Dori Dori is right.... its all about airflow and some custom duct work can do miracles to your engine temps. An FMIC can and will rob your radiator from good airflow, this is why I decided to get the bigger radiator and fans. I also plan on making custom ducting to lead fresh air to the radiator.

Ace - Mike Chen from freshalloy forums did my engine harness, all I had to do was to splice a wire into the steering pump. I have to modify the transmission harness a little, not a big deal though.

For people who are seriously into racing, and not daily driving, you could always rip out the A/C system, and most importantly, the A/C condenser. That would feed a slightly higher volume of air to the radiator.

Nils -- I have the same fans as you, but one of my blades is snapped. Happen to know how to contact the company? or if the blades are replaceable?

Heavy Throttle says it was in good condition when they shipped it, just like me trans, and my ignitor, and the MAF they never sent..

hmmm.. sorry about your bad luck, I have only experienced good service from HT. All I know is the fans are made by Perma-Cool, do a search on yahoo or something and see if they have a site.

Sorry, but that is the only info I can give you since I already threw away the instructions and fan info papers.

take care,n

btw - when you say snapped, you mean completely snapped off or bent?

I mean that 1/3 of the blade is missing. Causing the fan to shakeviolently when running

Hey daunt... so what is a moderate amount of boost to where the side mount intercooler would be sufficient? How much bosst should you go to b4 setting up a FMIC??

I got a dual fan switch.... not really adjustable, turns on and off at certain degrees through a temp sensor/switch. But, yeah, I got it from HT.

ouch!

The fans came that way shipped? Have you tried to get a replacement fan under warranty?

yup.. see the sensor there in the image... you stick that sensor into the radiator fins and it will read the temps. I havent installed the swirch yet but it looks like a fairly simple ordeal, even for less "electrically" gifted people like myself =)

Nils just wondering if you have a hookup on Volk Racing wheels? I love them but not enough to pay retail price.:(
