Hi.

I was wondering if anybody knows what is causing my engine (on a 240sx) to give off a loud flat tapping sound (about 1.5 times per second). Using a screwdriver to the ear I've been able to isolate the noise to the very front end of the engine (closest to the headlights) and right in the middle.

When I increase the reving, via the gas pedal, the noise seems to go away. I think. :-)

Could it be the timing belt? Is it the water pump?

Any idea?

Thank you.

if its right at the front it might be the timing chan guide on top. it would make more of a rattle sound tho. take the valve cover off and check it, if its at fault you can just remove it.

Thanks for the feedback. Really appreciate it.

One more piece of detail. When I turn on the car it used to rev (while warming up in the "park" position) at about 800-900 RPM's; however, now it's at about 1100-1200 RPM's. It drops back to 900 when I sift into drive (yep I have an automatic :-) ).

But the tapping keeps on tapping. :pface

Thanks again.

Your timing may be off...but thats a whole 'nother story. Try going up to a higher grade fuel for a tank too.

Nah bro it's yer timing chain. Some of the guides inside are plastic and break or wear away and that allows the chain to rattle around a little bit. Heres a fix. Next oil change buy some STP oil treatment ($4-$5), it stops leaks and engine noise. Throw that in the batch and it should sound as good as new. Also, make sure yer AC is OFF when you let yer car warm up. <<<Tom>>>
