I'm putting the Q up on a lift this afternoon to track down a slight clunking sound in the front end when swerving from side to side. I've already looked at wheel bearings and tie rods as well as the steering rack but that was with the car on a floor jack. I want to look at it before it goes in for a front end alignment next week.

Also, I'm doing my first oil change on the car and it looks like a real PITA to remove the filter, any tricks to it?

Upper control arms are almost guaranteed to need replacement. They are the most common cause of front end noise. Remove the oil filter from the bottom using a wrench that fits over the end of the filter after you take the lower cover off the engine. A bit wrist twisty, but doable.

There is a procedure in the FSM for inspecting the upper links.

Just look at everything for play and rubber deterioration.

I used that, and mine are within spec but they still squeak and clunk. I think the spec is a bit "loose" if you know what I mean.

Do the kingpins ever go bad?

How big of a job is it to replace the upper links? It doesn't seem like it would be too bad according to the FSM.

you know i was considering posting a new thread, because I was wondering about the kingpins as well... I looked in the FSM, and this is what I came up with...

I saw that in the FSM and my car doesn't have any of those symptoms. I was just curious because I hadn't heard anybody mentioning them as a normal wear item.

Now, how about the upper cont arms, how hard are they to change?

After going through everything, the biggest discrepancy was an inner tie rod had a little slop in it.

Nice link to the upper control arm swap out.
