I have a problem I think with the front drivers side brake. I can hear it scraping while cruising down the road at 20mph. It does not make any noise when brakes applied, but a sound when rolling down the road. I just had new rotors & pads installed (on all 4 whees) in February.

Is there something wrong with the pad, was the installation bad, is the pad somehow already worn out? Taking the car to mechanic tomorrow for AC and want to ask him to look at the brakes also. It stops fine and I am hoping that it just needs some sort of an adjustment.

Make sure he used a high temperature lubricant on the caliper pins so they slide easily.

Did he use a shim kit, or were yours good enough to reuse?

Have no idea on the items above. I did not buy a shim kit when I bought the rotors, pads, and SS lines so I guess he did not use a shim kit (don't even know what one is)

My Spanish is good when it comes to basics and speaking reinsurance terms, but not good on the auto repair stuff as mechanic did not speak a word of English.

I recently had the same thing happen. Scraping from the front left (perhaps it just seems that way since we're sitting closer to it...?). I took the car to be inspected shortly after it started, and my brakes failed. When I pulled the pads, I found one to be wearing crooked, and that had been causing the scraping (one end was down to bare metal, the other was fine). Under pressure of braking, the scraping ceases because vibration is not possible. I think the caliper on that corner may be bad, I'm going to pull it in a couple of weeks, after there's been time for some wear, and see for sure. One of my shim sets was in horrible shape as well.

Pull the pads and have a look, it's not a big job. If it's wearing crooked, I suggest having the caliper looked at by someone who can determine if it is bad (does the Q have dual caliper brakes?). You may just need to re-secure your shims (or new ones, if they're in bad shape) with some decent epoxy to reduce vibration.

LOL!

Since the calipers have been fine up until this point, im going to say, just take the pad off and see whats going on..... Wanna replace the pad before it starts eating your rotors!!!!!

Redman......large woman need love to my good man, just not from me :-) I am hoping that something just needs a little adjusting as I probably messed things up a few weeks ago when I jammed 75% on the brakes from 120mph to see how the new rotors and pads preformed. The front drivers side wheel locked for a split second causing a puff of white smoke when I did the 120mph stop so maybe messed something up there.

Id be surprised if it was because something stuck. Normally they grease the crap out of those things just for safety... Probably more than you need.

Im guessing this was caused by a bad shim or something.... I think it would probably be better to use NO shims than it would be to use a messed up one.

Yep! She said the L word didn't she? You locked um up then and there didn't you?

All kidding aside, that's most likely where your problem stems from. From such a speed to such a quick stop. I bet the caliper or pads moved or tilted. Those little clips on them have some play when I was replacing mine. Had to play with them to lock them in good with the pads.

I would just take the hour to take of the wheel off and ckeck it all out. Take the caliper off and check the pads. Or have your mechanic check them out.

In any case, you know your girl's sister is off limits!! That'll teach you.

well...the brake noise is no more. They took off the calipers, cleaned things up, and put back together. All looks good they said and now no more noise.

Reviving an old thread. My apologies in advance but I have a similar problem with my 93 that im about to diagnose and im just curious to see if I'm headed in the right direction. I slammed on a pothole about a month ago, completely destroyed the rim on my driverside and it developed the same symptoms as what was mentioned here. Light vibration, low noise around 20-25 mph, turning in any direction nor brakes pressed have any effect on it. 25mph and up, completely silent. Not a continuous noise but rather like a rubbing every second as the wheel spins. Thought it might have been the bent rim and tire, replaced with a good tire and a matching rim and the problem persists. Hoping its just an issue with the caliper, brake pad/rotor and not the wheel bearing. Ill post my findings if anyome doesnt chime in by the time I look at it but any comments would be helpful.

I cured this on another former forum members' G50 long, long ago. The splash plate behind (inboard of) the rotor is likely bent.
The good news is you can easily un-bend it.
