Depending on the depth of your new speakers you may need to make a spacer ring out of MDF or similar. I would suggest something that is non-porous though so it doesn't soak up moisture and get moldy.

Probably want to make a spacer that is at least half an inch. Again, you'll have to measure the depth and make the spacer at that time. You can buy pre-made spacers on ebay. I'm sure if you contact AppleBonker, he could fill you in on more details. All you need is a jig saw.

I would also suggest upgrading your stock audio system (if you are still running it). The stock system will not put out enough power to power after-market speakers. At least it won't be able to push them to their full potential. I would suggest speakers, a head unit and an amp if required depending on the speakers you choose.

Are you planning on running a subwoofer as well?

I'm gonna be doing my own speaker\amp upgrade in another month or so. When replacing the door speakers, I've read that some people have simply cut the old speaker from the ring holding it in - and then used that ring as the spacer. But if you want a more clean look, try this. I'll most likely go this route myself. They have an ebay store as well.

According to the site, it uses PVC, rather than MDF. So you won't have to worry about the spacer eventually swelling up due to moisture.

As for suggestions on upgrading your system, it really comes down to how much you want to spend. If you are upgrading your head unit, speakers, and adding a sub-woofer and amp, it can easily top $1000.

MDF still reins supreme as it adds more weight to dampen vibrations. FWIW, mine have yet to have any issues with moisture (going on about 2 years installed now). The PVC spacers are better than no spacers, but on an upgraded system reducing unwanted vibrations is key.

I wish it were that cheap. :chuckle:

Okay, I was thinking low-end and being optimistic. :chuckle:

For me, once I upgraded my head unit, I got the ipod connector, HD radio adapter, steering wheel interface, and OEM dash replacement with it. All that alone was at least a grand. Later when I upgrade my speakers and get an amp, it's gonna be another $500 at least. My only saving grace is that I don't have to pay anyone to install it. I do it all myself.
