Hi guys I've just got a 1989 240 sx. I have this problem with the back light of the RPM/SPD meters along with fuel gauges and etc... When I drive at night with head light on, and go over little bumps the light turns off and when I bang the top of the dash couple of times, it turns back on....Which and where is the wire i should check up on?

By the way, the motor does not idle at cold start. I'd have to step on gas alittle bit to let the choke to come on. Whats the cause with that problem?

for the light going out problem. just take out the gauge cluster to see if all there wires are properly connected. you might need a new wire harness or gauge cluster

sounds like a loose wire, also, use a multi meter to check your switch and make sure its not the problem

thanks guys. So the gauge cluster must be taken off to check this problem...seems like alot of work. The switch is working fine.

Do you have the heads up display? If so thats your problem because it controlls the back lights. My car had this problem when I bought it, I replaced it with a junk yard hud.

oh and takeing out the cluster isnt to bad you just take out the bolts on the bottom of the steering column and it will sag down, then you will be able to get the cluster out.

Take cluster out, check harness wiring connections, check for any damaged in the back of the cluster.....Taking the cluster is very easy, just dont force anything and ge gentle, I taken mine off and on like 10 times with out breaking anything...

Nothing helpful to say, just laughing (not at you) because my B13 used to do that ALL THE TIME! I tried a new cluster, new bulbs, spliced new wires into the harness, and nothing. That thing was a POS though, it could've been anything with the amount of rust holes it had. And ****, now that I think of it, make sure you check your fuses, and the condition of the box itself... that's probably what was wrong with mine...

I do have a headsup display and that does go off and on as well. Weird thing is, the display and the rest of the gauges goes off and on, separately...well whatever it is...i'll take out the cluster and see whats going on...thanks guys!

first take out the black bezel that surounds the gauges and has all the buttons on it, you will have to disconect the plugs from the back to get it all the way out. Then there are a few more screws holding the actual cluster in.

You need to drop the steering wheel, two screws, just let it hang to where you can slide the bezel out, makes it a lot easier....

ok dont take the steering wheel off...just drop the steering column....thats what I meant to said.....2 10mm screw on the bottom, you need to take bottom panel, side step trim piece and footwell driver side panel to get the bottom trim off and get to the 2 screws...and remember take your time with the bezel....
