2003 PF with 130k miles, 4wd: Just noticed the left front inner CV boot is badly torn and the right has started too. The boots are only ~$10 each and we'll want to do all four, but I noticed RockAuto has the entire shaft, including boots for only $40 each*. At 130k miles is it a good idea to just replace the whole assembly? How hard is it to pull the shaft out? Also, anyone know if a split boot is available in case we want to go the easy route?

Thanks in advance.

* RockAuto has the cheap CV assembly's for $37 made by APWI and by Cardone for $53, any difference?

I am not familiar with apwi but I've heard cardone axles seem to be a more decent quality than most. My wife's subaru had a torn boot but rather than deal with a new boot or aftermarket, sucked it up and bought oem-reman...which are reman by cardone (hopefully to a higher spec than sold in retail stores)

Replacing the boots will take you as much time as replacing the entire half shaft assembly.

Probably even less time ;) . I see on youtube you don't even need a puller, just unbolt from the diff. It's my son's truck & he has to pay for it on a tight budget (I get to pay for his college tho). If we decide the basic <$50 ones will work we'll probably do that, others are priced over $100 we'll pass on. He doesn't 4x4 much anyway.

In an old post someone said the old hardened boots tend to go bad after a lift. We did a 2" about 5k miles ago, so that probably did it.

I would bet the lift is what did it. My boots went out 1500 miles after a 2-2.5" lift. It just happens.

It's funny how younger guys will lift their trucks and fit bigger tires, grille guards, etc. and then cannot afford the repairs caused by the additional wear and tear. Speaking as a young guy with a lifted Pathfinder sitting on 31.5" BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain tires, LED headlights, HID fog lights, Grille Guard with mounted auxiliary lamps, custom exhaust, aftermarket stereo, LED turn signal lamps and reverse lights.

I recently had my wiper control transmission go out, and I have a nasty parasitic battery drain that I cannot chase down (even have a thread here about it). I am scared to see the bill when it comes back from the shop, but man, it sure looks good sitting there lol.
