Im finishing up rebuilding the engine (VG30E, stock, non-turbo) for my '85 300zx and I hit a bit of a snag. I might be being dumb here, but it feels like I'm missing a piece. Below are pictures of both camshafts because I wanted to show that the passengers side is at least an 1.5 inch deeper than the drivers side. Shouldn't they look exactly the same? And for the seal itself (the quarter inch thick rubber one), I know that it just gets shoved on so that it is flush with the aluminum of the block, but what keeps the oil from pushing it out when its spinning at 7000rpm? I could really use some help with this one. Thanks.

I don't know why they are different, but the cams look to have been installed corectly judging from the position of the dowl pins. Just make sure they turn smoothly. As far as the seals, just keep them flush with the head. They are not under pressure so they should seal ok. they may leak somewhat due to the rust on the cams.

It looks like you got it. I can't tell about cam installation but it all looks pretty good to me. When you put those seals on, I usually use a 5inch 3/8s extension to act as a drift to hammer the seals in. Install them just pass flush and even all the way around. On the crank seal, if you haven't already installed it, be carefull not to roll the inside lip on the crankshaft while you getting the thing to fit in. Between the cam gears, tight fit and that little plate that goes between the seal and the crank gear, none of seals are gonna go anywhere. goodluck
