What is the square cutout in the front bumper?

It has a hook. I'm not sure what it's for... I think it is to tie down something on your roof. There is a picture of it in the manual somewhere.

It's the front tow hook. You can use it to drag the car out of a ditch and to tie the car down on a flat bed carrier or trailer. It's a cable strap thats attached to the front subframe.

I think this is a common location for European cars. It improves the front ground clearance and might have been easier that trying to attach something to the front subframe.

he's right, its only for temporary use ie...while pulling out of a ditch, and it is never to be used while you pull the car out at an angle, always straight ahead.
