Maxnix is giving you good advice. The car is old and the fluid is immediately suspect if it's dark. Even if the brakes were fine, you ought to get rid of that old fluid. You can do a complete fluid flush by yourself in an hour or so for 10 bucks.
Since you're convinced that the fronts are inop, this would be a great place to start. Besides, you'll end up at the front calipers and have a chance to get up close and personal with them. It may be that you may have some frozen pistons. That's fairly easy to diagnose but not as easy to repair.
Has this been a daily driver or has it been parked? How long since last brake work?
