Front axel shaft play?

1991 Hardbody 4x4 front axel play. I took the inner and outer bearings out along with the hub and rotor. So my? is when I grab the shaft (he said shaft)how loose should it be? Tight, lil' play? Help I've got it torn down and need to finish.

Is this a 4WD vehicle with CV shafts on the front?

Yes it is. Without the inner and outer bearings in should I be able to wiggle the end of the shaft.It's not exactly firm in the knuckle.

You will always need to have some lateral play in CV shafts. If you put a solid axle in it, you'd have to call it a Jeep.
