2009 SCHEDULE & RULEBOOK

Nightly Promotions for Drag Racers and Show Car Participants Adds Excitement

New Drag Racing Divisions to Create Better Competition for Everyone

Atlanta Motor Speedway has announced their plans for the 2009 Friday Night Drags & Show-N-Shine season. The third full season of family fun will begin in May with the conclusion set for early September. The track has planned many different activities to enhance the fun and competitive spirit of the Friday night event schedule. New classes have also been added creating more divisions in which a drag race competitor can find without making wholesale changes to their street racer.

Fourteen nights are on the season calendar for 2009. Children’s events will take place on several nights including Candy and Coin Scrambles, Power Wheels Drag Races and Fireworks. There will also be events allowing any female drag racer free entry, ride along events for drag racing passengers and double points nights. As always, Atlanta Motor Speedway will bring in some wild additions to the show including the Great Moodini, jet cars, hot rods, nitro bikes and more.

The Show-N-Shine car show portion of Friday Night Drags will once again culminate at the speedway’s second NASCAR event. The best of the best will be invited to be a part of history as they will once again participate in the pre-race activities, but this time prior to the first Atlanta night race. Each night’s winners throughout the season will be eligible to be a part of this nationally televised event. There will also be special event trophies at each weekly scheduled event this season. Show participants can look forward to muscle cars, trucks, classic cars, tuner cars and motorcycles. The Show-N-Shine Speedway Parade and Front Stretch Show will also return every Friday night in 2009.

Drag racers can look forward to more defined division separating the four cylinder ‘tuner’ type vehicles as well as the trucks. The Domestic and Domestic Advanced divisions have new tire rules and improved separation from those competing in Sportsman division. There will be thirteen divisions competing each week at Friday Night Drags. The season will again culminate with a final points night and a championship ladder based on those point finishes.

“Our goal is for our participants to have the best opportunity for close competition without getting super technical,” said Atlanta Motor Speedway event promotions coordinator Ted Austad. “It is street racing, so it has to be as simple as possible. We want everyone who wants to have some fun and drag race somebody to have a fair shot at winning.”

The season begins on Friday, May 15 with a pre-season test and tune. Participants can register for the year, complete the annual tech inspection and practice. The following Friday night is the season opener and will be a full night of drag racing in all thirteen divisions, plus the Show-N-Shine. There will not be any points awarded for the event on Friday, May 22. The points opener is set for the first Friday night of June.
