so i bought a used sr t28, and while im buying up all my other ka-t parts i am going to have it rebuilt so its fresh when i drop it in. i was wondering what types of break in procedures do you have to do when you run a freshly rebuilt turbo for the first time? cause i wanna do it right and extend the life of my turbo. Thanks, TJG

first 500 miles take it easy, let the seals set, after that boost once in a while untill 1,000. After 1,000 miles, you should be good to go.

For a properly built turbo, there is no break in process(garrett). Beat the piss out of it.

really? cause it is a garrett. i have heard of some people letting it idle for 30 min or so... but there is really no need to break it in or take it easy on it?

see, everyone i have asked says ebay, and i dont understand cause the internals are the most inportant part of the turbo, and you guys are putting ebay parts in there? cause i know everyone hates on the ebay turbos, but isnt an ebay rebuild kit pretty much the same once its installed in a garrett? or am i totally missing something here?

The thing is, those kits might be fine if you buy one from the right person.

However, when rebuilding a turbo yourself, there are a few things that most people miss. Namely wear and damage that for someone who has never seen this stuff looks fine. Also, if you rebuild that turbo and make a small mistake your going to ruin it. Its best to send it off to a turbo shop and have them do it right.
