Car: getting that new burnt rubber smell everyday

Post

ok guys, heres the deal, I just finished installing a sr redtop into a 92 240sx. everything was all in and ready to go. try to crank the car...nothing.... turn turn turn and nothing. a few times later the engine finally came to a zombie like awakening, where as it ignited one piston, and skip skip another and eventually the engine came on. try to press the gas at idle....boggs the engine and kills it. each time after that the engine turns on better and better amd finally i get some kind of pedal responce. try to take the car home from the shop but it feels like there is no power... the engine is revving higher but i am still in the same spot. on the drive home i had to keep the pedal between 10 and 25% throttle as to keep it from killing itself, but alas it died 3 times on a 4 mile trip home. my question is if in fact ignition timing is to blame for the lack of power and good pedal feel, or is there another underlying problem of more serious sorts? i am running no exhaust after the 3in down pipe, there is a breather hose connected to the Apex'i super intake before the MAF that is connected to nothing but air, and one of the heater hoses because of the way it has to bend, pinches the round shape its supposed to be almost to point of closeing itself off. oh yeah and the oil pressure gauge i have is reading about 4, but the oil lines connected to it are very close together with a zip tie holding all of them together. any of the above possible problems, or is the timing off or is compression bad....cause i really dont know. thanks for the help in advance.Rob

Have you checked the spark plugs and wires?

checked spark plugs, and they have carbon build up all on them, which is strange cause they were brand new before the swap. it makes me think that the ignition timing is retarted too much, but before i change the timing, i want to make sure

Are there usually problems with an SR20det when you first install one? People have told me in the past that they had problems with their sr's when they were first installed. So are there usually problems?

ok update, had to tighten 2 coolant leaks and adjust the timing. runs pretty good in the neighboorhood but feels like there should be more power then what i am feeling, mind you i am only taking it up to maybe 5000 for this break in period. but there is some significant popping sounds comming from the exhaust (i mean down pipe, exhaust is on order) and sometimes when i let off on the gas all the way the engine about stalls. also, i have a apexi BOV installed but i have yet to hear it. headers are very hot even after a small run and something doesnt smell right. im about to change the plugs to denso platnum but what is with the other stuff??

man i will, and i will post pictures of it soon and then maybe everyone can look and see if my BOV is hooked up right, cause at this point i have the bov at the hot pipe and the recirculating valve is still there too.

another question, how loud is the SR fuel pump? 300zx? i can hear it working loud and i really dont know what i have, it just came with as a freebie
