So got an estimate from Infiniti of Marin CA to replace freeze plugs on my '96 Q45 for about $1800.00.Notice green stuff on plugs when I had the crossmember changed. Is this a big deal. Infiniti of Marin thinks it is.

Oh well, what the sht kids can go to public school this year. The Q must survive.

Can you reach them? If so, drain the coolant, knock them out yourself and replace them. Freeze/core plugs are usually under $2.00 a piece, and the aviator gasket you put on them before installing is like $6.00 a bottle.

That sounds awefully expensve to replace those two plugs! I'm not sure that I would worry about them if they're not actively leaking... I would lean toward keeping an eye on them, but that's just me.

I have heard a couple of reports of the block cracking a little around them during removal, but I don't know how common that is. I just use the flush, refill, flush, refill, flush, refill, flush, refill method with a case of distilled water and skip them.

Well, I admire your priorities.

Unless it is seriously leaking, I try only half heartedly yourself on a lift, and if it doesn't go, just keep the expansion tank full.

Just read your post and called Infiniti service to see if the work had started, and was told that the plugs are leaking to the ground. That sounds like an active leak to me. So let the job begin.Still sounds like a lot $$ but tech says it's a 12 hr job.OH Well

There's something we're not getting here. If we're talking about the drain plugs that are removed to drain the coolant out of the block, there is no way that's a 12 hour job.

Those plugs are shown in the owner's manual under "DIY Maintenence" and are designed to be somewhat accessable. 12 hours of labor sounds like they're having to remove and replace a lot of stuff. Must be something else...

I recall the service manager saying 'removing the transmission'.I guess I should pay more attentionI do recall when I had the cross member replaced last month I saw green stuff caked on plugs and these plugs looked very accessable. That tech never said anything about a problem (not Infiniti).Marin Infiniti never screwed me before so hope for the best.Marin, ($145.00 just to look) : yeh on the way there I passed at least six Bentleys at mid day. :Some parts of the country aren't hurting at all.

$1800 would buy a LOT of antifreeze and distilled water...
