I was driving on the freeway today, Driving normal like 65-70 Mph, When I seen a pothole tried to avoid it but couldn't, Pulled over thinking I just popped a tire. When I got the wheel off It was completely bent/crack and a piece came off. It sucks cause the wheel is discontinued so I cant get a replacement. Guess its time to save up for a different set, What to get!?

I have damaged my wheel 2 weeks ago on a local road and sent a claim letter to the city. They require two estimates for repairs or new part, along with the pictures of the damaged wheel.

It's a long shot but you can try the same thing and maybe they pay for it..

My buddy had damaged his wheel back a few years ago and he got reimbursed by the city. You gotta file a claim for the damaged wheel, take pics of the road and have different quotes of bodyshops to(minimum 3) to get the average cost to repair or replace your wheel in your case

Damnnnnn!!! That sucks and good thing is you didn't loose control with that blow out and damage to the rim. For your next set try to stay away from cast wheels if you can.

Wow dude that blows... & that's a "discontinued wheel"? Lol... u crazy. Forged wheels ftw nolimit, however, city should pay for a whole new set of wheels if these are "discontinued." Make sure you say you were going the speed limit (whatever it was on that section of the freeway,) go back to that spot & take pix of the pothole... dont get hit by a car.

I wish I had known this back when I had the same thing happen. I had discontinued wheels as well, but I didn't even bother sending it to the city at all, and bought a whole new set. (Not the easiest thing to do while in college with only a part time job...) OP, I would definitely at least give it a shot - Hopefully you still have your stocks to get you by in the meantime... :yesnod

Yea, put the stocks back on. There were all scratched up, so painted em with plasti dip and I like them better in black. It'll work for now until I can think of what I wanna do.

Actually it was a rock size of a softball that was in pothole that I rolled over. My wheel is also discontinued. I am planning to send the letter during this week. I have not taken the tire off the wheel yet. Will do it tomorrow and post some pics from other side of the wheel.

WOW! I haven't seen a hard hit like that!

You should definitely get in touch with the City to see if you can be reinburst for the wheel damage. That is how potholes get cleaned up on streets from people damaging their wheels. It only has to happen once for the city to come out and fix it.

Were those aftermarket wheels?

You can check out www.allfactorywheels.com for replacement wheels.

Went there last Friday. No luck. Even if they managed to fix it somehow, it would be out of balance drastically. Have to order two rear wheels now in different model but similar enough to the fronts.

Yikes!! :ohno:

I sympathize greatly, but unfortunately, many wheels are simply not strong enough for the weight of our cars. Same thing goes for tire load ratings.

In general, it may seem as if things will be okay, but the dynamic shock of hitting a pothole can totally overload the tire (or wheel) combination leading to what you see. Particularly with ultra low-profile tires!

Fortunately, you survived - could have been quite dangerous at the speeds you were at! That is what matters.

Personally, I would put the stock wheels back on ... :yesnod

You should send those pictures to the wheel company.

Just because I'm curious, let's say the city was willing to cover the damage to wheels on city roads - would they still cover it if they found out or knew that your wheels were not stock? They might.. but I'm sure they could make a case against not being willing to cover the damage because of aftermarket wheels (somewhat like insurance - if you don't notify your insurance company of the wheel modifications then they won't cover any claims against them). Good luck though, at least you have an excuse to buy some new wheels!

@nolmt50. Today I went rims shopping and there was the guy that said the same thing happen to him. (Im in PA) He has a family member who work for the city and he says that not all roads are covered by the city. So before you file a claim, find out if that street or road is covered. if not, he says that you should find one that is covered and have pot holes that could do that damage while doing the speed limit. and you that one for you claim. just say thats the road you were driving on. Im not sure how it works where you live or what the dude told me is true. But its worth looking into.
