Just an FYI... might have been done already.

I took a look at the stock intake on the 45 and saw a sandbox/resonator in the fender.
Took it off because I saw that it was somewhat isolated from the motor. Doing this would allow more cold air from the wheel well and opens up the intake quite a bit.
Felt an immediate improvement in throttle response. Not bad for spending less than 10 minutes to remove a couple bolts.

Edit: I didn't see the same setup in the 35. Looks like the intake boxes are slightly different in design

not sure if it worth it because open up that route will introduce more dirt and contaminant. unless you're using k&n filter, you're going to have to swap out air filter more frequent than you want.

I get what you're saying, but it's not any worse than sticking a cone filter even lower with an aftermarket cold air intake.
I'm going to put some sort of mesh or chicken wire to prevent leaves and other bigger items from getting sucked into the air box.
I've ran other cars like this with no problems. The fender liner does a pretty good job of keeping most of the stuff out.
For the cost of a cold intake, I can buy at least 25 drop in filters.
I'm not a fan of oiled filters on cars utilizing MAFs.

coolant by-pass sounds good during warm or hot seasons but I would not use it during winter.
