Todd?

Do you have any sound clips with the rear muffler off???

I was thinking of making some sort of modular system.. Id use some braided stainless steel tubing, remove the rear resonator (should only take about 10 mins) and then replace it with straight pipe, or maybe something with a small muffler or something.....

It basically looks like about 3 feet from that id need to fill in....

This way I can have a loud and poewrful exhaust when I want it, and then quiet when I want it also...

What do you think?? Im trying to keep things as low cost as possible....

Working with the rear muffler assembly is the most cost effective and weight saving mod you can make on a Q.

Find a dual in dual out straight thru Dynomax ULTRAFLOW.......the quiestest lowest backpressure [you can see straight thru each section] muffler made. Both the corporate Q have this ULTRAFLOW muffler held in place by Chrysler oval bands onto which have been welded the 4 oem mounting brackets/ears so it it supported in oem fashion .

http://www.dynomax.com/ultrafloss.stm

http://www.a-1performance.com/...3.htm

Look at 17280 [2 1/4"] or 17276 [2 1/2"] dual in dual out pipes

both under $200 in stainless steel, the welding straps and ears should make this an under $400 exhaust redesign.

17515 is a 2.5 dual in/out welded aluminum that cost only $125 but stainless at $60-$70 more is a better deal looks and life wise!

Please don't bother [waste you time] with any other muffler manufacturers JDM or domestric.

We have retrofitted and designed systems for dozens of Q45.

You're saying to ignore any JDM exhaust?

That seems a little harsh..

There are plent of JDM exhausts made specifically for the Q45..

Not to mention stillen developed a Q45 exhaust.. Even though it's no longer sold..

Have you ever seen the stillen unit Q45tech?.

For those that might have a Lexus Sc400: scarey active suspension and rear steering thing the US cars never got.

Great link..

I take it that link right there would sound similar to the Q with no rear muffler, correct????

I believe you will find the drone and body vibration without rear muffler is beyond mosts ability to cope.Any time you change system you will have to recalculate/redesign/replace/add to------ the vibration dampeners on the exhaust system.

Simply amazing what those Nissan engineers know. Even more amazing that Dennis even found an acceptable alternative that didn't diminish performance.

Q45Tech, what would you think of a dual exhaust setup using the UltraFlo SS muffler, 2.5" piping, X pipe and high-flow cats? Any guesses of performance gains?

I've had 4 different exhaust systems on my 1990 car: oem til 50k, Stromung {50-120k], Stillen {120k-200k} now back to oem [a 95 take off at 200k] ..........too much rust and rot without stainless. Too much vibration and droneing after 30-40,000 miles on any aftermarket where they change the pre muff resonators or piping design.

None of the aftermarkets changed power or acceleration more than 0.15 sec in the quarter mile or less in 50-80 mph test.

More than 10 HP gain is really difficult to get from exhausts, if you go with JWT ecu you can gain a full 10 HP from 6,300-7,300 rpm because the oem designers didn't worry about back pressure above 6400-6500 rpm where the shifts took place and power was already reduced by tcu.

Since all the gain is from 6000 and above, the time the engine is in this range is short till 81 mph [6,000 rpm] at most you have 3.7-3.9 seconds till 7300 rpm [97-98 mph] locked in second gear.

The time from 45 - [53-54] mph [in 1st gear] is pretty short already so not much time to apply the extra 10 HP.I was more than willing to give up the 0.1 second for piece and quiet..........not to mention vibration.

The Ultraflow was the last experiment back in 1999 and ended up on our long term 450k Q car after a short stint on mine and has passed thru 2 other Q in the last 4 years. Currently on T3 owners 250k Q. Probably has 100k on the muffler by now. Still relatively quiet.

I wouldn't change the cross over design or pre muff resonators as they are stainless straight thru types [similar to Ultraflow]. Really really really loud when you remove the exhaust piping from their outputs. Plus they don't weigh much.

The oem cats are already higher flow than anything you can buy in aftermarket that will last more than a year or two..........the high flow you can buy are thin and light on reaction material....they fade fast and then you get to buy another set.

Measure the back pressure at oem O2 bung.

Q45tech,

What did you think of the Stillen exhaust? I have one coming on the car I am getting, and would be interested to hear your impressions on it..

Thanks

Toyota introduced that active suspension shortly after Nissan on some of there JDM models.. One being a celica I believe.. It would be interesting to see the differences between Nissan and Toyota's active suspensions..

They put it on quite a few of their vehicles, I've seen the listings for the active suspension controllers for quite a few toyotas.

Toyota was smart they saw that US consumers won't maintain their cars and thus got no bad rep. They know that 99% of Americans can't be trusted with machinery.

You should hear the LS400 air suspension owner whine and cry at $900 air bag/shocks and $900 compressors and the other $2,000 that usually goes wrong.......its usually a $4,000 bill to get the car off its knees.

We have installed 3 other Stillens and seen a few others.....nothing magical, better than any reflective muffler designs.

Wouldn't be worth the effort to change if you accept the noise level.

If you scroll down about half the page, you can see two soarers (one equiped with active, one without) taking the same corner..

Look how much body roll is in the non active soarer... the active one remains poised..

Active is good.. Worth the maintenance if you can appreciate the benefits.

I remember the Stillen being stainless steel..

Is this correct?

I won't change it. I figure with the jwt ecu, it will give me a slight power bump.. a little is better then nothing.. I want it more for the sound and hopefully better looking pipe design.

Do you remember the design of the pipes? Would you rate the sound good or too loud?

Our Q45 catback is FINALLY being fabbed. Car is on the lift, jig is being made and (post-modification) dyno testing should be done Friday or Monday, I'll post up results.

Setup will be similar to what you asked about, MiniMan, except with a minor difference or two. :)

Tsk tsk Wesley.

We HAVE a member here who removed the rear muffler and added dual resonators. It's LOUD.

Search MultiMedia for 1qckser's Q.

Thats the image for the active suspension... incredible!

Hey wes, just thought I'd let you know, I took off the cats AND mufflers from under the cabin, the only thing left on my exhaust is the last muffler, and let me tell you what, it sounds nice until you actually get up in the revs, then it sounds like the old pissed off bumble bee in a peanut butter jar. I'll probably be removing that next weekend, putting in straight pipes from the headers back, since the only thing left is that one last muffler ;)

I was just reading thorugh this thread, and Im gonna try and do the exhaust mod, with the dynomax muffler...

First thing, would a regular muffler shop be able to install it, or for that matter the independent I took it to for the suspension.....?? What would it cost to install it, $100 or so

I dont know how to weld, but my uncle does (worked for an aluminum boat mfg), however it looks like you have to bend some metal pipes to fit on there.....

Josh, did you get some sound clips?

Wes not yet, as I've been a little too busy lately to drive the very, very long way to the only shop that will do it, and still give me an inspection. Plus, they will cut off the muffler for about $20, so, I'm thinkin about seeing if I can get in line today.

The owner of Torrance Auto Body has a first gen Q with straight pipes from the pre-silerncers back. Sounds good at idle, but it's WAY too loud on throttle for me, it does sound wicked though. I have been planning on getting a Magnaflow dual in / dual out for mine, I've used them before and love the deep, mellow sound, not buzzy at all, I guess it must be similar to the Dynomax muffler. Carsound cat's are made by Magnaflow too fyi. I may go with a generic though, since I can get myself a fully stainless dual in / out for very cheap. And you'd asked above if any muffler shop can install whatever you get, yeah, any muffler shop can do it. Installing mufflers is a cake job for them.

I agree with you.....

My borla setup is perfect, IMHO.... Rumbly at idle, but still silent at idle...
