I recently bought Fred's JWT ECU and TCU from the winter mishap he had. I installed them Monday in my shop class (and checked a bunch of sensor readings while I was at it). The TCU was the first thing I noticed on the way home, then the ECU when I opened it up past 4000RPM. My gf was impressed. No CEL or warnings, just smooth smooth smooth. Q guys, the 1st gear TCU is pretty cool. One side effect is that you can't manually shift between 1-2...it will shift automatically regardless of what gear you've selected. But if you start out from a stop in 1st and floor it, you will still be in first when the needle soars past 7000RPMs. That was the first time my car has ever done that in its life. The 2-1 downshift was a bit rough right after installation, but only 2 or 3 times, and I haven't felt it since. Perhaps the units were getting reacquainted with one another. The other cool thing about the TCU is that it waits a little longer before it shifts, allowing you to use more of the power band in each gear. Together, they're VERY cool. My tired old car has an entirely different persona around town! Like it's on Viagra or something. The funometer is pegged!

Thanks again Fred!

Sorry for stealing them out from under you...my car's been needing these for a while though. It just didn't have quite the kick that 100k cars have, and I maintain it pretty well. Plenum, TB are very clean. Temp sensors are new. All fluids are less than 1 yr old. Next on the list are the various harnesses and connectors that are all cracking, possibly even the main engine harness (dash removal required). If and when I get to 250k I'll replace the timing chains and also consider doing a valve job on the car too (or maybe just swap the engine). For day-to-day, the TCU is what really makes the car fun, since the ECU differences are are only felt at WOT. You can get a '93 TCU for about $100, based on others' experiences, and it will give you the 1st gear start. Apparently, it doesn't matter if the donor car has HICAS or not, but I think you need to make sure the TCS and active susp options are the same, and stick with CA or non-CA standards.

Dae: Just make sure you keep one eye glued to the rearview mirror to stay away from the law!! The car can be intoxicating with the 1st gear start.

It would be really intoxicating if one can figure a way to up the 1st gear/diff ratio by 35% so that it would equal the M45 or 2003 Q..........or most post 1998 performance 5 speed AT.....................even the LS400.

9.85 [90-93Q] just doesn't cut it when others are at 13:1 they act like they have another 100-120 lb/ft from the engine at least in 1st gear. But sure beats the 5.5:1 ratio of a second gear start........just think it can stay in same gear from zero to 90 mph.........talk about dynamic range
