I just bought a 96 Toyota Tacoma and was wondering what you would recommend for an oil. I'd like to just run one type of oil all year. I'd rather run a full synthetic too, which I'm currently running in my 240 and have had no problems(Mobil1 15-50). Also I was reading what you said to flush your motor of sludge with, but can't seem to find that article again. This truck has 87kmi on it, if that helps any.

I forgot to add the truck will be in Cleveland, OH and upstate NY. It's also a 4X4. I don't have the truck yet, so can't look to see what the manufacturer recommends.

What kind of engine is in it? What will the use be?Short distance commuting? Urban freeways? rural free ways?

What will your OCI's be?Run during winters I take it?

It's got a 2.7L 4 cylinder engine.

Some short distance driving, some freeway, some rural free ways, and the occassional like 4 wheeling. So basically the truck will be a jack of all trades.

OCI...whatever you recommend for the type of oil.

It will be run all year long.

Also, do you have the link on good oil filters, because I can't find it but I'll try searchign again.

Are you looking for a good Dino oil?

Then 10w-30 or 10w-40 in summer, 5w-30 in winter, Best Dino for the money IMO is Chevron Supreme It has a group II+ base stock. GTX, Pennzoil, Shell are just as good but cost twice as much..

If you are willing to go to blends, ValvolineDurablend 10w-40 in Summer or 5w-30.

If you are willing to spend for synthetic it kinda dpends on how clean you think your engine internals are.an excellent sleeper oil with good detergency is the Castrol Syntec in 0w-30, (its a repacked Castrol SLX from Europe, thicker than most 30 weights more like a 0w-35, meets ACEA A3 which is a sign of great basestock for a 30 weight to be able to meet that, its appearance and smell as well as performance in some UOA's, indcate a likely ester base oil, like Redline,.... if you buy this be <sure> to check on back, MUST say made in Germany and ACEA A3 as some old stock ACEA A1 group III base oil is still around and not such a great oil and will say the excat same thing on front of bottle. works well year around has a great HT/HS)

If you feel engine is clean, ie it looks clean under your valvecover (peek thru oil filler cap) clean you can use Mobil1 0w-40 all year around.

Thanks a ton Fred. I'm going with either the Castrol or the Mobil1, depending on the motor looks (have to wait until I pick it up on Wednesday to check).

Any pointers on filters? Sorry for being a pest....just want to make sure this truck lasts for a long while.

Stay away from orange death.

Bosch ($6), Mobil1 ($12-13), OEM ($5-6) are good choices.

Even the Walmart is <much> better than the Frams.

I'm thinking about going with the Bosch. Don't feel like spending $12 on an oil filter for the Mobil1. Bad enough I spend $5/qt on the Mobil1 oil.

Nissan/Infiniti OEM filters are a gfood compromise between cheapo filters and $13 filters.OEM;s are essentially as good as the $12+ ones except for teh filter media.

Fred..:)

PS:Many of our sponsors have good prices on them too.

hey Fred, would I get any benefits from switching from Valvoline 10W-30 Dino to a synthetic in my 3.8 Eaton Self contained supercharger (I really need to change the fluid in that sucker...) pushrod motor that leaks a little and may burn a very small amount? It's got about 170k on the clock now.

Yes the basic Valvoline wont be up to a SC application especially in summer.

Chevron Supreme 10w-40,or 20w-50 if u wanna stay with Dino.

Valvoline Durablend in 10w-40 or 20w-50 if you are looking for a blend.

Fred.....got another oil related question. Would it pay to go with synthetics for gear oil for the F&R differntials, transfer case and transmission or just going with a plain gear oil? I'd rather not spend a lot extra for synthetics if it won't make that much of a difference.

In those applications the main advantage of syns is higher tolerance to extended OCI's and extreme temps.

IMO you will see 85% performance of a good syn from a non syn premium dino in those applications.

Is the extra $ worth it?

Tough call sometimes, for an older car that has seen most of its wear already Syns are often a less economical choice perfectionists take.

You make the call with your $$

I really like the durablend... I dont think most people will go much more than 3k miles unless its a LOT of highway driving...

My 90 day rule puts me at about 2000 miles (change due tomorrow)... My oil is pretty dark (ok VERY dark) from the added detergents in the durablend "cleaning" it up...

I recommend it, $16 for a case makes it a great value IMHO....

PS... Fred, are you back in town yet?
