Since I am rather new to 240sx ownership. I was wondering if most of them rust on the frame rails on the driver side right underneath the floor. I have a convertible it has a minor spot on it. I am in the process of trading for a hatchback shell. I had some rims sitting in the shed for a few years. The hatch has a bad auto transmission. Then engine and transmission are out of it now. My buddy said he would weld up the frame rails on it for the trade. I just wondered if it's a really common spot and/or why. Do the frames hold water there? Does it get splashed on more? Water drain that way?

don't really have an answer as to why they tend to rust there, but yes, that is one of the more common spots to find rust.

There's a reason why it rusts on the driver side more easily.

1) Probably has to do something with the exhaust being on that side

-and-

2) When you're driving, guess what's on your driver side? Traffic! So yeah, I guess in a way, it will get splashed more.

That does make sense the getting splashed more then the heat from the exhaust. I never even thought about the heat from exhaust.

It is because of the exhaust heat and not because of excess splashing on that side. Thats a funny way to think about it though. LOL

It makes sense. Excess heat does funny things to metal. I work at a steel mill. In a Coke Plant. You should see the rust we get there from ovens being 2300 degrees. It takes no time at all and everything starts to rust away.

Heat is the cause, but you will also notice 93-94 models don't rust as much.... The frame rails were then being coated with an inhibitor at this point.
