I needs it. According to the Fram website it's the 3682 series (PH, XG, TG, etc) but that's too small. The oil filter that was on it before was a Napa Silver 21521 (1521 part #) and the closest Fram filter I found to that was the PH43 but that's too shallow. I've already purchased the Fram filter as it was part of one of their oil change deals so I'm not looking to switch but at this point anything is better than this trial & error BS.

I use a motorcraft FL1A because its the same filter my 393 stroker in my bronco takes. Motorcrafts are a good quality filter that ford uses on all their cars/trucks. I would just use one of those. Its a very big deep filter.

My engine is a z22, but im pretty sure all the z's share the same filter

I have heard of other people using the FL1A on their napz, it's a good looking filter and it's less than 4$, not to mention it's huge. I tried to use it in my ka24, but the oil pressure sender is in a different spot than the napz, so I had to go back to the Fram PH2870A, which is realy for a VW Passat 1.8T.

The Passat filter is the same as my ka24's stock one, but a tad longer.

If you can get away with using the FL1A, then I would do that. The threads and o-ring are exactly the same as the Nissan's.

The 3682 Fram filters are for the car blocks. The truck blocks use a larger filter. The NAPA filters are made by Wix. The Gold filter is one of the best filters you can buy. I have used them for years. Have disassembled engines with over 200,000 miles on them and they were as clean as when they were first assembled.

You probably have the same problem I had, the filter the bool calls for is to short. Use a PH8a. The same ones that are used on V8's! I work at Oreilly's auto, and did a lot of research on this.

This is what I ended up doing. After a lot of cross referencing and a lot of wrong part numbers we where able to find the correct one (the PH8a). Too bad I didn't know you before I started though, would have saved a lot of trips

I think you have a California emissioned vehicle, I also have one.By looking at your other post (Which part is this) you have one equipped with the High altitude set up.

I wouldn't recommend a fram filter. I like Purolator.

I might try that motorcraft one next though.

I think purolator is best for the truck. I use the fram in the wingroad (6608).

Just a piece of advice on filters, if you are hell bent on using a fram because of price. The penzoil filters are always a buck cheaper, but the commercial use filters are always around the same price as those two and alot better quality.

If there is an Orielly's auto in town ask for the Pentius filters. They are constructed like a Bosch but the paper element is probably not as good.

The fram oil filter i've had is holding up better than the nappa one. I would expect the fram filter to blow and start leaking before the napa one.

Just to add to this....

I work at Pep Boys as an ASE auto tech...

I was grabbing a new filter the other day for my bronco and couldn't find the FL-1A motorcraft, so i grabbed a purolator. Right before i walked off i spotted a motorcraft and picked it up. Holy crap....the motorcraft filter was MUCH heavier than the purolator. Whatever is in the motorcraft one, its a lot heavier than the purolator.

I started paying attention to filters a little closer over the next couple of days and the older techs some questions. Turns out that our Proline brand of crappy filters is identical to the purolators, they make them. Some replacement purolator filters are also considerably SMALLER than the dealer filters i was removing. This could potentially void a warranty on a new car.

Moral of the story....try to stick to a dealer brand. They aren't going to make an inferior product that risks damaging the engine under warranty.
