I just installed 555cc injectors and a z32maf on my SR. I have my ECU tunned by enthaply. Now my car is running very rich. Sometimes black smoke will come out of the exhaust, sometimes when I rev, it will spit black soot out the exhaust, when I first start it up it'll idl fine but after a while the idl will drop to around 500 and jump from 500 to 1000 constantly like it's trying to die. Also, last night it backfired really loud when I shifted into 3rd.

My first thought was maybe the maf wasn't wired right so I unplugged it and started the car and it ran worse and would not rev past 2000 (limp mode I assume) so the MAF must have been wired right.

Now I'm wondering do I need a adjustable FPR because of the bigger injectors? And/or do I need to adjust my timing at all?

EDIThttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2q_jHmtfdQHere's a video of my car just idling. The video goes pretty quick because my digital camera cant hold much video. The smoke coming out the exhaust is black and not white, the video and lighting just makes it look kinda white.

sounds like it's just running rich. i would check the tune. it wouldn't hurt to have a adjustable fpr butadding an adjustable fpr to fix this problem may cause it to idle fine but run too lean under load.

Is there any way to check the tune or would the only choice be sending it back to get retuned and hope it works?

if you can borrow a wideband a/f meter, you can test the fuel mixture yourself.that way you can lean the mixture one way or another to see if it corrects the problem.for example, if you see that the meter is off the scale rich at idle. you can give the car a vacuum leak by pulling off a hose on the manifold and using pliers to pinch it off a bit until the fuel mixture is around 14 to 1 and see if the idle smooths out.i wouldn't recommend driving around with an intentional vacuum leak though. once you confirm the tune is bad, get it retuned correctly.

steve s14:No one around here has a wideband, all people use are narrow band. Which I dont think would really work.

what kind of injectors/where did you get them? it's possible that they aren't flowing 555cc of fuel, or enthalpy made a tuning error.

also is your timming set right or is your BOV leaking air or your MAF wired right??? just somethings to check

I know my MAF is wired right. I unplugged the MAF and ran the car and it went into limp mode, it wasn't in limp mode when the MAF was plugged in so.. Im assuming it's wired right?

Also, I bought the injectors off the classifieds here on Nico. I bought from a respectable member who I'm trying to get a hold of.

When I bought them he said they were 550s Tomeii/Nismos he got from Phase2. I thought the Tomeii/Nismo where 555? And phase2 only shows 555. I imagined it was just a minor mistake so I had the ECU tunned for 555. If they were 550 and I had tuned for 555 wouldn't that cause me to run lean or would it even make that big of a difference? Secondly, the injectors have red tops. On every site it shows them with yellow tops and the 740's have red tops, but every photo is the same photo so it might be just a photo used to represent the injectors.... or the colors of the tops don't matter at all. Is there any way to tell by looking at the injectors what they are? I tried to pull one out but it wouldn't budge so I didn't try too hard. On the side of the injector will it say 555 or anything like that?

EDITXAT shows redtops on the 555cc injectors and a few pictures on google images shows them with red tops but I'm not too trusting of the google images pictures.

My Nismo 555's have a yellow top.

I just did the exact same upgrades including the Enthalpy tune and I seem to run a but rich at idle but not THAT rich. I would bet you have 740's or something.

I just checked my codes on my ECU and it showed 12, Mass Airflow Sensor. So I guess my wiring wasn't as good as I thought.

I've searched and searched and read all the wiring diagrams but I still don't have it right.

I used JWT diagram as a reference to wiring the maf. Maybe I got something crossed.

For reference heres the 240 plug I with the cut wires sitting next to the wires they were attachted to. The 240 plug was cut and wired into the harness. The plug wires are a differet color then the wires on the harness so basically the wires start one color then are wired into the harness which uses different colors so the wires change colors. From left to right: Black with white stripe wire turns into green with red stripe wire, black wire turns into black with white stripe wire, white wire turns into black wire)

Heres the z32 wired up to the harness

Here's how I have the wires:

B 0-5v Signal wire (white wire from the Z32 plug) is connected to the black wire (which, was wired onto the white wire on the 240 maf plug).

C & D ground wires (black and yellowish wires from the Z32 plug) are both connected to the black with white stripe wire (which, was wired onto the black wire on the 240 maf plug)

E 12 volt wire (black with white stripe wire from the z32 plug) is connected to the green with red stripe wire (which, was wired to the black with white stripe wire on the 240 maf plug)

If there was a leak after the MAF (air getting sucked in some how) would it cause the MAF to screw up?

Hmm, have you checked the +12v to make sure it's getting 12v? Next, I'd check out the ground. Try adding another ground onto that ground connection.

Just to be sure, if there was an injector problem (leaking seal, too big of injectors for tune, etc) it would show up on the ECU codes right? So I dont need to worry about any of that, just the MAF?

not exactly. it might throw an injector leak code or fuel system rich or lean but those are generic codes to state that there is a problem with the fuel system.any leak after the maf will cause problems. the computer only knows what the maf measures. if air gets into the system after the maf, that extra air is not accounted for by the computer and therefore the car will run leaner than normal.example- the computer sees that the maf measured say 2 gallons of air entering the engine and adds the correct amount of fuel for that 2 gallons.but since there is a leak after the maf, the actual amount of air entering the engine is 2 and a quarter gallons. that's a quarter gallon of air that is not going to get the correct amount of fuel so therefore the mixture will be lean.

Ok.

So after I made sure power was ok and I regrounded the MAF to a secure ground on the chassis. I reset the ECU error code. Then I ran it. It runs good but the exhaust pops a bit and spits black stuff when I rev it to about 4. I checked the ECU codes again and it read off 55 (no malfunction). Do I need to let the car run a little bit for the ECU throw out codes?

Question 2:Lets say I didn't tune the ECU at all and I just put the Z32 on and the injectors in. Would the ECU spit out codes saying the maf is messed up and the injectors are messed up or would it just run crazy rich?

Woot for more video!

Alright, this might just be because the injectors are bigger then the stock and I'm not used to it but there is a noise that sounds like you can hear the injectors stop pumping the gas when the engine is turned off. Here's the video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqr52DRygNs

You can't see anything but all you need to do is listen as soon as the engine dies you here what sounds like pressure being let off and then what sounds like a small squirt gun, is that normal to come from the injectors? You can also hear the fuel being pumped (through the fuel rail I imagine, or being pumped into the injectors) whenever the fuel pump primes (When ignition is turned to ON) is that normal too?

was the tune a generic one for the mods or was your car dynoed then tuned? every motors is a bit different at least get some piggy back to properly fine tune your fuel/ ignition
