Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon.

"Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today.

Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband.

"She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said.

Muzzammil Hassan was arraigned before Village Justice Deborah Chimes and sent to the Erie County Holding Center.

I guess the irony of the whole story is this.Bridges TV is a stations/site setup to bridge the culture gap between Americans and Muslims (I assume of the world). With the symbolism that Americans have seen on TV of American Troops, Journalists and Hostages being beheaded in the Middle East, maybe this was not a wise method of offing your wife. I mean it should never be socially acceptable to just kill your wife because she is serving you divorce papers. But cutting her head off? Oh yes it made a point. Now the whole of America will be against you and cause others to have to deal with and sooth over relations between the two groups.

Unfortunate, because, as we've seen here thanks to Tariq and Z, becoming educated and enlightened certainly helps bring us all closer together.

I tried not to bring this up. This happened in my wife's hometown. The guy had a history of spousal abuse. The Arab community here has had some big problems. I'm not saying it has to do with their ethnicity or their religion. However, a lot of the local big time drug dealers come from the Arab community. There are several shady Arab owned businesses in the city selling fake cigarettes. The "Lackawanna Six" was a few miles away and now this. We have a large Arab immigrant population here. I'd have to assume it's because of our proximity to Canada, and the low cost of property. The majority of them are hard working good people. I fear this will continue to rift what is a widening gap between the local Arab community and the populous at large.

It's cool, but i'm right there with you man, not to get off topic and onto the topic of religion but in islam we do talk about christianity and how similar the two religions are...okay i'm done talking about that, maybe at an upcoming national meet we can discuss it...lol

In the study of religion they (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) are considered as the 'Abrahamic Religions.'

I think the greatest medium for breaking down religious, cultural or ethnic walls is actually interacting with people.

I did notice a comment on alarabiya that someone was calling for the man to be tried under Sharia Law and not under US law. My first thought was, "Sure so he can get off scot free." But then I thought, under whose Sharia Law system? Aren't there multiple judicial systems in the world and no established system in the US?

When US citizens get US justice abroad, I'll go along with it.

If he does get tried under Sharia Law that would be one thing if he were in saudi arabia or the other countries who strictly use such law...but i'm gonna go with greg on this one, he committed a crime in the us where he is a citizen and where he resides and where he commited this horrible crime.

You can't hide behind Sharia Law if you live in the united states.

edit: and even if he were elsewhere, i think (personally) he should still be punished for what he did to another human being.

It is a crime of one human being against another - the religion of the people involved, or their country of origin, is not relevant. The crime was committed on US soil, so he should be tried under US law (specifically NY state).

Regardless of which, I think (don't really know, of course) that the Islamic community there is probably in shock about it. And worried about the public and media backlash that seems to happen in these situations.

I am certainly totally outraged! The guy should be drawn and quartered, if I had anything to say about it. Or maybe he should beheaded for a punishment ... "an eye for an eye" (only religious reference that applies).

You can't hide behind Sharia Law if you live in the united states.

Fortunately, Sharia Law does not allow/discuss beheading of one's spouse as justifiable - there is no possible justification that makes this criminal action right. The guy should be tried, convicted and punished appropriately - under NY state law.
